A World of Fantasy, 17 years in the making.

I've been running an episodic tabletop rpg on and off for 17 years.

The world I've been building is developing a history. A past generated by the players and their characters, who have came and went over the years. Lodera, the "Cowboy Continent" was my focus for much of that time. Although recently, I built an independent Florida sized nation off the coast of one of my other lands and started creating a story with a quirky idea of tying in characters from the past, shaping events of the future. The idea was to take a break from one style of storytelling and focus on a very different set of lives, ethics and surroundings.

The results have been pleasant. I'd say this has been Planescape Meets Farscape so far, with a undoubtedly strange group of player characters (A Clockwork Gentleman, A Master of Disguise With A Yellow Streak, An Emotionally Supercharged Psionic Fairy, A Cowboy Robot, who can turn into a Ghost (RIGHT?!) and a Genetically Altered Bee Woman) exploring the unknown and being rather roguish in the process.

Where I thought these characters destined for Iconic status in the world would be more heroic, they've been more goal and job oriented. It's entertaining and somewhat surprising to see a different group of players/characters from Lodera go on a Holy Quest and a group from this new land I've named Valice, be on the path to becoming deplorable, and somewhat unprincipled profiteers; with more in common with anti-hero tropes, than with Iconic characters. I really enjoy the challenge it's presented to create a new space, while the players yearn to explore it.

One of my closest and oldest friends has been there almost from the start and said his goodbyes last game. He started a new real life adventure and moved across the nation. I'll miss him greatly, but I'm so happy that he'll have the chance to start anew out there.
