The Mission

Captain Jean-Luc Picard sighed and sipped his cup of Earl Grey. Repairs to the Enterprise-E have gone faster than planned, and now it was time to meet his new crewmembers.

He had already picked his new first officer, Worf. He was reluctant at first, but Picard managed to convince him that he was the only man for the job.

Worf had enlisted his best security officer as the new security chief. Pelin Chul was a seasoned officer, having been in many battles, including the Occupation of Bajor. He knew Chul had an attitude, but he trusted Worf's judgment.

Geordi LaForge had gladly stepped in as second officer, along with his normal duties as chief engineer.

Deanna Troi had informed him of her replacement before her and her husband, Captain Riker left for the Titan. Even though he was fresh from the Academy, she knew he was the best choice. Like Deanna, Ensign Jungmo Kim is half Betazoid. He has studied psychology extensively, and he is more than ready to take on as ship's counselor. He will certainly have his work cut out for him, considering the Enterprise had been dealt a crushing blow with the loss of Data. Picard hoped Deanna was right in choosing someone so young.

His desk console chirped, and he hit a panel on his desk. Dr. Beverly Crusher's smiling face appeared on the screen.

"Hello Jean-Luc," she smiled sweetly at him.

Picard set his cup down. "How was your first day?"

Beverly sighed. "Not much has changed since I had this job last." She studied his weary features. "Going over your new crewmembers?"

He nodded. "The only one that's missing is my chief medical officer."

Beverly grinned. "I think you'll be pleased with him. Hand picked him myself. He's a Betazoid, fairly young, but graduated at the top of his class. I'm sending his file over now."

Picard picked up a padd off his desk, skimming through the file. "Dr. Changmin Shim?"

Beverly nodded. "He's a good kid..." Her voice trailed off as a nurse came in and whispered something in her ear. "I hate to cut our visit short, duty calls."

"I understand. I'm supposed to meet with Admiral Janeway soon to discuss our mission."

"Keep in touch, Jean-Luc."

"I plan on it." He smiled and signed off.

Picard barely had time to take another sip of his tea before his console chirped again, this time with Admiral Kathryn Janeway staring back at him.

"Hello Jean-Luc, I've got a little mission for you." She glanced at the padd in front of her. "There's a gentleman from the Daystrom Institute who will be transferring over later on today along with a Trill scientist. They will be studying that android of yours. I'm sending their profiles to you now."

"Yunho Jung. I've heard of him."

Janeway nodded. "He's young but extremely gifted. He's studied Noonien Soong's work for most of his life. Commander Maddox is sad to see him go, but is looking forward to reading the reports. He also sends his condolences to you for Commander Data."

Picard nodded. "What about Dr. Xiah Kahn?"

"He's the cybernetics authority for the Trill Science Ministry. Fairly young, very pleasant. He also is continuing the work of Kahn's previous host, Lenara. But for now, he's on loan to us."
