Ive become a movie buff. Im noticing this now, at this point in my life. I can do nothing but read up on films and find out what others including directors, Cinematographers, screenwriters, and actors think about certain movies. I also have a crave to find movies that even I havent heard of. I just search and search over and over again. Though, if ( Read more... )

a bit long-winded... 12daysinanhour November 10 2005, 21:13:30 UTC
if you like david lynch you should rent Mulholland Drive (2000 or 2001). it's fucking odd, but not to be confused with Mulholland Falls(1996), an even better mob movie with nick noltey.

what kind of movies are you more interested in? studio or indie? old school indie used to have better plot lines and shit, while the production value was low, but lately i think indie films have just become a trendy word used to capitalize off all the pseudo-intellectual movie snob types and they just try to make them so far out there, story wise, that they become incomprehensible and therefore more useful as a study on why pre-production is necessary than for use as entertainment. i hate the current increase in stupid ass kids who think anything indie is cool and if it isn't indie it means they sold out. i mean, for christ sake, universal backs indie films!! huge film corporations put BILLIONS of dollars into indie films now. it's so much bullshit. selling out doesn't mean making money, selling out is making SHIT just to get money...

wow...

i just had SO MUCH more shit i was about to get into, but i think it would be a little out of place here...sorry about that gary. :-) you know how carried away i get.

anyway, moving on...

if you want a few good movies off the top of my head, i don't know if you've seen these, but you should:

Falling Down
it was released around '92, i think. it's a joel shumaker movie, and even though i'm not a big fan of his shit, i do love this movie. it's got michael douglas as an amazingly sane man in a crazy fucking world, and he finally does what we've all been wanting to do; plus he gets to upgrade his weapons along the way.

The Hours
definitely falls into the realm of "chick flick", which i usually don't go for, but this is a beautiful film. i think it was 2001 or '02, i don't remember who directed it, but it has a great cast of meryl streep, nichole kidman, juliane moore, clair danes and ed harris, among others. it's about virginia wolf and a story she wrote and how it effected her life and that of 2 other women, all from different era's, and how they were all connected. the scene with wolf's suicide is beautiful.

Waking Life
it's the dazed and confused director, it's from 2000 or 2001, and i can't say much else. it's animated, but...you just NEED to watch this movie, you really just NEED to.

so, anyway, this is the worlds longest comment, i'll catch you later, alright gary? i love you, and i hope i helped in your quest for movies. :-)

Thats the thing, the biggest reason why I was asking, I can get into pretty much any type of film wether it be indie or studio.

Take The Dreamers for instance, a American kid that moves to Paris in 1968 to get away from having to go to war. It starts out with him meeting a very essentric brother and sister. In 1968 there just happened to be a major film revolution, like London or Italy but its impact on the film was just a small part. It was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci in 2003.

And then I will jump to a movie like The Girl Next Door. Most of us do it but I can enjoy just about every type of movie set in front of me.

Now about everything that you were getting into I really havent gotten to the point where I can even start making any remarks about what I think with whats going on in the industry right now. I do like the older indie films out there that I know were incredibly low budget but were able to show what they needed with out using special equipment or effects. Which is what I like the most but I havent seen many films like these other then what I would hope would come on to IFC or on Amc or something.

Now:

Falling Down
Ive seen Falling Down and it was a great movie. It was realeased in 1993. I think the funniest part is the burger restaurant, obviously a mimic of McDonalds, and Douglas' reaction. It's kind of like he realizes, "Hey, I'm this far, why not complain about the burger while I'm at it? It's always bugged me anyway!"

The Hours
I havent watched it yet because alot of movies that have been made since the new 2000 havent cought my eye. Dont get me wrong though, there have been many that are amazing. Its just that I think many are starting to lack the ability to draw me inI was really surprised to go to the theater to see The Lords Of Dogtown. And I think I might look up some other things Catherine Hardwicke has done.

Waking Life
I look forward to seeing this one. I looked it up to see what it was about and sounds like a great animation. I think I might go ahead and buy it, since I do that anyways, because alot of my friends at IADT are in animation.

Hopefully Ill get to see you on Turkeyday. And you did help out.
