this is a rant

we are living in the least original decade in history. the one trend that transcends music, movies, fashion, and culture in general is to copy what's been done before.

the 90s had grunge and neon colors. the 80s had new wave and yuppies. the 70s had disco and early metal, not to mention the greatest movies of any other decade. the 60s had hippies and revolution and acid and the beatles and hendrix and peace and love and all that shit.

what do we have in this unnameable decade? our greatest filmmaker steals from everyone. our greatest musician steals from everyone. and don't get me wrong. they are both ground breaking, and extremely creative people, but they are ground breaking in the way that they take old shit and make it new.

everybody walks around in their vintage clothes with their ironic 70s mustaches, listening to neo-80s / neo-70s / neo-60s / neo-fucking-50s music. what do we have that is truly unique to our time?

i guess i just said it. we are generation i. i, of course, standing for irony. no decade before this one had the appreciation for irony that we have. in fact, most of the retro things that dominate our culture are intended to be ironically retro. so there you go. we have irony. now i feel better.
