The List

They were finally back home and out of danger, at least for the moment.

“I see, you made it back alive,” Bob Zanotto greeted his son and his favourite and only granddaughter. “I was a bit worried,” he added more quietly.

Truman rolled his eyes. “Dad, we were only kidnapped,” he said as if it wasn't that much of a big deal, which in their family it really wasn't.

Lili snorted. “Like this is something you should be worried about.”

Bob smiled wistfully. “I know I shouldn't be, but I can't help it.” He looked at his son and saw understanding in his eyes. Truman himself was always worried when his little girl got kidnapped. Which happened surprisingly often, or at least it would be surprisingly, if she wouldn't be a Zanotto.

“Well,” he said and looked at his granddaughter. “How many do I have to add?”

Lili put her hand on her hip and looked sourly at him. “Honestly, like you don't already know. Two.”

“Just asking,” Bob grumbled and went to the room where they kept all the awards, trophies, medals and what not any member of the Zanotto family had ever received. That and a very special list.

Lili and Truman followed him and once inside the room they went straight to the list, which was taking up all of the east wall and contained all names of every living and dead Zanotto. Behind the names were a more or less impressive collection of notches. Behind Lili's name he added two more and one behind Truman's name. To Bob's surprise he noticed that his son was coming dangerously close to his own record and as for Lili...

“The seventh time this year? And two of them in one week? Honestly Lili, you are going to break aunt Betty's record in a few years if you keep that up.” His granddaughter peeked around him and looked at the notches behind the name of Bob's sister.

“How did she manage to get kidnapped two-hundred and twenty-nine times anyway?” she asked after a few seconds.

“Daughter of a top agent, sister of a top agent and later grandhead, and partner of Ford Cruller,” Bob said casually. “And of course she was a top agent herself.” He did not need to mention that, obviously, she was a Zanotto and that alone would have probably explained everything.

Truman sighed. “Thanks, now I have an idea, what trouble my little girl will get in.”

“Oh don't worry, she'll get out of it just fine. Nothing serious ever happened to a Zanotto when they were kidnapped,” his father calmed him down.

Just then Lili's mother called them from upstairs and they left the room, leaving behind the famous Zanotto Kidnapping List, which would be updated on a regular basis as long as the Zanotto family existed.
