I've finished the Deathly Hallows. And am sorely, sorely disappointed.

Spoiling left and right, and brimming with my fresh-wound venom; fair warning )

I was pretty upset about Book 7, too. Half of it was total blather with nothing useful behind it -- which has happened before, but in this one it was boring, too.

And, yeah -- I always thought Dumbles was evil, but to find out that he was a ruthless manipulative bastard not as some characterization screw up by Jo, but *on purpose* . . . that just made me crazy.

The thing I hated most was that Harry never grew up. She promised us a coming of age story and reneged. He stayed the same too-stupid-to-live child he always was, knowing finally that Dumbles was a ruthless bastard, but choosing to follow Dumbles' every command without a single thought of his own anyway. That just broke the series for me.

You're totally right about the Harry thing. I think the reason why that didn't disturb me at all was because by the point of HBP I already resigned myself to the idea that Harry is only going to defeat Voldemort because his *being* is just superior to hapless aborted-fetus Tom, not as a result of having completed some coming-of-age, becoming-a-better-person type saga. The whole fate was decided at the stage of Lily vs. Merope, and Harry could no more learn how to think and act than he could choose to beg the hat to put him in Slytherin. Or so it seems to me...

But yeah, despite all that, I was hoping the story to not be *boring*.

Oh, believe me, if you've already read people's recaps and meta talks you're not missing anything by not flipping the pages.

And yes, if JKR was angling for this all along... Which she must have been on some level, even though I don't know *why* she wanted this twist to be kept for the grand finale... I really think she did a fabulous job of it. I just really wish she didn't couple that with being gay, though. Other than that, I have nothing but applause.
