Sigh, is it summer vacation yet?
Mrs. Stephens has done it again. Assigned an annoying assignment that doesn't go well with its purpose and turn it into high school group work with only 3 class periods to do it(Monday, Friday, Monday). Of course, by the will of my peers and the universe, one of the group members (theres 3 of us) was absent Friday and both were absent today. Now here I am writing a damn conversation (which has to compare both authors) between a feminist that has been dead for a hundred years and a feminist scientist from the 70s. And now I'm wondering if both members will be absent tomorrow too, if so, that will make this thing quite interesting....
Keller(scientist, me talking on the left side): Hello Ms. Gilman
Gilman(100 years dead, me with a bonnet on, talking on the right side): Hello Mrs. Keller, how are you today.
Needless to say, it would make a mockery of the content but it will certainly make me laugh and Mrs. Stephens annoyed. But I will admit, the authors that were given to me are that bad. Gilman's women slowly going insane story is full of good metaphors and imagery, the diaolge was well done too. Keller's logical approach to the the subject of the difference in intelligence between sexes and the role of women in science and other male dominated professions is way better than the other essays that follow the classic feminist stance: "rawr men bad, women oppressed". She actually doesn't all out blame men but instead blames society and stereotypes. But people must keep in mind that these essays were written at times when women made 1/8 of what men make (Keller) or didn't work much at all (Gilman). Today women are making strong advances in all fields and are making 8/10 of what men make (I suspect that this is due the fact that there are some extremely rich men that tip the scales ex.: Bill Gates) soon enough women will be making the same amount as men and feminism will fade away, never to torture male students ever again....
In other news, I was actually watching the Grammys (only because I had nothing else to do that late) and various famous artists were on stage and were actually singing a post-Rubber Soul non-single song by the Beatles. And to make it even better, it was the awesome song "Across the Universe" off of Let It Be, sung by John Lennon beautifully. But as most covers go, they fucked it up, the singing style was off I suspect that they changed lyrics, the singers weren't into it, and it just looked plain ridiculous seeing Stevie Wonder sing it, a song that is an almost completely different style than his. So that made me sad en mi pantalones.
Btw, I was at Borders the other day and I started a list of dvds I want to get.
