Summary: Bella, Alice and Rosalie move into a house that Bella inherited from her grandmother. Bella soon finds out that the strange stories her grandmother used to tell her might not have been so strange after all. ALL HUMAN, except for Edward.
The next day was Sunday and I had the house to myself for most of the day. On Sundays, Jasper and Rosalie's parents - Carlisle and Esme - would meet them, Alice and Emmett out for breakfast. Carlisle and Esme had repeatedly invited me to come along - and sometimes I did - but most of the time I used those days to study for my classes.
I spent that morning reacquainting myself with the house. The living room, kitchen and dining room were on the main floor along with a few other rooms. One of those other rooms was a small, personal library that had been a library for a very long time; my grandmother had kept it that way when she bought the house.
That room was totally mine.
I'm sure the two other rooms would be claimed by Alice and Rosalie to do with what they wished. It was nice that we could all have our own space within the same house.
I had unpacked everything except for one box; the large box that held all of my books I hadn't been able to part with when I moved to college. I picked up the heavy box and lugged it out of my room and towards the stairs. Walking slowly so that I wouldn't fall and break my neck, I made it down the stairs just as Alice, Jasper, Rosalie and Emmett came through the front door.
“Help. Please.” I squeaked as the box started to slip from my grasp.
Emmett took the box from me and easily held its weight in his arms. “Where to?”
I pointed down the hallway to my right. “First door on the leave, please. Thanks Emmett.”
“What's the first door on the left.” Alice asked.
“The library.” I replied and then looked at them with a hopeful expression. “I hope you guys don't mind that I kind of claimed that as my room.”
“You won't hear any complaints from me.” Rosalie shrugged and went to the kitchen.
I turned to Alice, who looked extremely upset. “What's wrong?”
“What's wrong? You know how much I love libraries!” She pouted severely.
“Alice, you hate libraries.” I said, worried that she really was upset with me.
She grinned suddenly. “I know. I was just messing with you.” She giggled, took Jasper's hand and headed for the stairs. “Have fun with your library, nerd.” She added teasingly.
I laughed and turned down the hall, meeting Emmett at the library door. “Thanks again, Emmett.”
“No problem.” He nodded, punching me lightly on the arm. “The girls want to have a fire tonight outside in the fire pit. Are you gonna join us?”
“Sure, sounds good.” I nodded.
He left to go find Rosalie and I started unpacking my books. I rubbed my arm as I took out the books and sorted them into certain categories.
'Stupid Emmett and his stupid strength,' I thought as I pushed the now empty box to the side. My arm would definitely have a bruise later.
I spent the rest of the day sorting through most of the books already on the shelves, moving things around and tidying some things up.
When I had entered the room, the first thing I saw was the large window on the opposite wall, with a mahogany desk in front of it. To the left of the doorway was an old leather armchair with wooden armrests. The left and right walls were almost completely all one big bookshelf, reaching all the way up to the ceiling; they were so tall that they had one of those sliding ladders on each side.
Before I knew it, Alice came skipping into the room to tell me they were going to start the fire.
Jasper made hamburgers on the grill as Emmett built the fire in the fire pit in the backyard. Alice, Rosalie and I grabbed lawn chairs and placed them around the fire pit; I took one of the chairs that faced the edge of the woods. We all grabbed a burger and sat down.
“You want to know what I saw when I went into the woods to get sticks for the fire?” Alice asked and didn't wait for anyone to ask what. “A dead deer,” she pouted.
I frowned. That poor animal.
“It had a big wound on the side of its neck,” she added sadly.
“Ew, Alice! I'm eating here!” Rosalie yelled.
“Do you think there are bears in the woods?” Alice asked.
Emmett shook his head. “There would've been more than just a bit to its neck if there was a bear.”
“Maybe you shouldn't go into the woods by yourself, Alice.” Jasper said, his expression calm but his voice full of worry.
“Don't be silly. I can take care of myself.” She turned her nose up at his comment.
There was a rustling that came from the woods just then and we all turned to look. My eyes locked right onto the boy, standing there at the edge of the trees. He stood as still as could be, looking past the others to me.
“Creepy,” Emmett said dramatically, turning away from the woods with the others. “We talk about the woods and then there's a noise.”
I looked at each one of them curiously, seeing that they had not noticed the boy. I was confused; how could they ignore him standing there? I looked back towards the trees; he was still there.
By the crackling fire light, I could see his face. He looked just as confused as I was, but his eyes never left mine.
“Earth to Bella!” Alice said loudly and threw a marshmallow at me. Apparently they had gotten things to make s'mores.
“What?” I asked, tearing my eyes away from the woods.
“What're you looking at?” She asked, turning her head in the direction I had been staring in.
I was about to ask them why they hadn't noticed the boy there, but the weird looks they were giving me stopped me. “Nothing... I must have been daydreaming or something...” I replied quietly and shoved the marshmallow into my mouth. I glanced once more towards the woods, but he was gone. Disappointment flooded through me at once.
I was so confused. How could I want to see a complete stranger again; someone who had broken into my house and was starting to seem like some kind of stalker? For all I knew, he could even be a murderer; one that draws you to him with his dazzling beauty and then goes in for the kill.
I shook my head at myself. That all seemed so far-fetched... but then why had I thought of it? My mind was not the kind to automatically think up gruesome things like that.
One thing about that silly theory was right, though. I was definitely drawn to him.
****
I went to bed a couple hours later; once again opening the balcony doors for the fresh air. I changed into a pair of soft cotton pajama pants and a tank top. Sighing, I laid back on my bed and picked up my book, deciding to use my bedside lamp instead of trying to dig out the booklight.
The lamp set my room into a warm glow. With the dim light and the smell of the dwindling campfire from outside floating in on the air, I felt more relaxed than I had in a while. Tucked confortably into my bed, I read the pages of my book for, at least, the fifth time. Wuthering Heights was one of my favorite books that I could always get wrapped up in, but tonight I had a hard time concentrating. My mind was circling through everything that had happened since last night.
Now that I had a quiet moment to think, I realized how stupid it was of me to think that something was going on; something like what my grandmother had talked about in her stories.
Frustrated with myself for continuing to dwell on all of that, I set my book down and turned off the light. As I laid there, I tensed each muscle in my body, starting at my feet, and relaxed them. I always did this when I had a hard time sleeping; it helped make sure I was relaxed enough to doze off. Concentrating on each muscle also helped to clear my head.
I flexed my fingers and then spread them out again I could feel sleep creeping up on me when Isis meowed at my door.
I bolted upright, relaxation completely forgotten, and stared at my door.
The cat meowed again and then scratched forcibly at my door. Her meows didn't drift away down the hall like they had last night; she stayed right where she was. Slowly sliding out of bed, I went towards the door. My heart beat furiously in my chest and my body tingled in anticipation.
Was he out there?
'Maybe I should just wait for her to stop meowing...' I thought, hesitating at the door. I thought maybe ignoring what was happening might just make it go away... but I know that my desire to see him would win out.
As my fingers grasped the door knob, my bedside lamp turned on. Jumping, I spun around quickly to face the inside of my room.
There he was, standing next to my bed where the lamp was. His eyes bore into mine and I felt butterflies in my stomach. He had been beautiful the night before in the moonlit hallway, but tonight the warm glow of the room made him look even more magnificent.. if that were even possible.
I don't know how long we stood there, unmoving and tense. It could have been seconds or minutes or hours. I wanted to go to him. I wanted him to touch me again, to feel his icy fingers on my skin. To feel the electric shock his touch sent to my heart.
When I finally found my voice, it was shaky and almost breathless.
“How did you get into my room?”
The corner of his mouth lifted into a crooked smile and he chuckled once, as if enjoying some kind of private joke.
Was he laughing at me? I scowled. “Are you going to answer me?”
His smile disappeared and he was suddenly right in front of me. The first thing I noticed was that his eyes were different... they were lighter; a light gold. He was breathing fast and he looked slightly confused.
“You can see me?”
His voice was like velvet and I was sure I had never heard anything so melodious and beautiful in my entire life.
I recovered as quickly as I could. “Of course I can see you.”
His eyes shifted away from mine for a moment, almost nervously, and then he looked back at me. “How?”
I raised an eyebrow. “You're standing right in front of me...” Was he crazy?
His lips pressed together in a hard line and he looked as if he was trying to concentrate; trying to hear something. All I heard was the stupid cat. After a quick moment, he straightened up, his body tense, and looked at the door behind me.
I didn't have a chance to react at all before the door swung open and knocked into me from behind. Falling forward, I tried to prepare myself to hit the ground, but a pair of arms caught me. Strong, cold arms. He helped me steady myself and then stepped away quickly.
“Oh, Bella, I'm so sorry!” Alice said quickly. She had Isis in her arms. “I didn't know you were standing just inside the door.”
I was confused for a moment as I looked from the boy to Alice. How could she not react to a gorgeous guy being in my room? I would have expected her to become excited and start asking a bunch of embarrassing questions.
“It's ok...” I said after a moment.
She looked at me curiously. “Are you ok?” She hesitated before she added, “I thought I heard you talking to someone...”
I was suddenly ready to put an end to all of my confusion. “Yeah, to him,” I said, motioning to the boy.
Alice's eyebrows raised as she tried to hold onto Isis, who was struggling against her. “Who?”
I turned to look at him expectantly, waiting for him to introduce himself to her.
“Edward,” he told me, as if he couldn't just tell Alice himself.
I turned back to Alice and motioned at him again. “Edward.”
She was silent for a moment, a concerned look on her face. “Bella, I don't see anyone...”
“How can you not see him?” I asked, frustrated, and looked at Edward again.
He was still there and, for some reason, looked surprised. The look in his eyes stopped me from turning right back to Alice. I felt as though I could lose myself in his eyes, and not care if I ever came back to reality.
“Maybe you should try and get some sleep.” Alice said slowly from the door.
Finally turning back to her, I nodded a little and she left my room. She probably thought I was out of my mind, and if she did I think I might have to agree with her. I had no idea what was going on and felt myself becoming more confused with each passing minute.
My attention was back on Edward; he was watching me with curious eyes.
“You are Isabella?” He asked softly, thought it sounded more like a statement than a question. He took a step closer to me, close enough that I could reach out and touch him.
Having him as close to me as he was, was making it hard for me to concentrate on answering his simple question. He must have guessed the answer because I didn't get to say anything before his brow furrowed and he seemed to become frustrated.
“Why can't I hear you?” He shook his head to himself and looked to the side, to the floor. I didn't understand his question enough to try and answer it.
“Are you a ghost?” I asked. I desperately wanted to know what was going on; I hated being so confused all the time.
“No,” he replied absently, shaking his head again. Then his head snapped back up and he looked as if he realized he had misspoken.
I felt a small breeze and at the same time I realized he was no longer standing in front of me. In fact, he wasn't in my room at all. Sighing, I sat down on my bed and waited a few minutes to make sure that he really was gone.
He was.
