As soon as she woke up the next morning, Allison’s mind raced with questions she couldn’t think of answers to. How should she act around Greg? Would he act differently to her now than he did before they had slept together?

She tried to keep her mind busy with other things as she went through her morning routine and then prepared to go pick up Elizabeth. Unfortunately, the closer she got to the town, the more she thought about Greg. She looked around as she walked through the town and towards Robert’s home, located above the tavern.

The town was as it normally was - people going about their daily business - but for some reason, she thought something was supposed to feel different. She didn’t know what exactly was supposed to have changed since the night before, but she felt that at least the way she saw things would have changed. She was a woman, but now she was a woman. Yet, everything was exactly the same.

Allison found Elizabeth and Robert eating breakfast on the tavern’s front porch. Elizabeth yelled happily when she saw her sister but was enjoying her food too much to get up and greet her.

“Did you have a good night?” Allison asked them.

Elizabeth nodded, her mouth full of food.

Robert chuckled and turned to Allison. “I was wondering if you could help me out tonight?”

“Of course.” She said with a smile. She had wanted an excuse to be in town, after all, so she could possibly see Greg.

“Well, I have a new girl on to help and I was wondering if you could show her how to keep up with everything.” He added.

“Ok.” She nodded.

“I’m finished!” Elizabeth announced loudly.

“Alright.” Allison held out her hand and the younger girl took it. “I’ll see you tonight, Robert. And thank you again for watching Elizabeth.”

Robert nodded and watched the two of them head for home.

“I can’t believe you didn’t hear anything last night.” James said for what Greg thought must have been the tenth time that day.

They were sitting at their usual table in the tavern, others chatting loudly around them.

“Will you stop with that?” Greg asked harshly. “Did anyone else hear what you heard??”

“Well… no, I don’t think so.” James said thoughtfully. “No one said-…”

“There it is, then.” Greg interrupted him. “You were hearing things. It was all in your head.” He looked away to glance around the place. James didn’t reply and Greg was glad for it as he spotted Allison by the bar, talking to another girl…

Allison had only been there for a few minutes when the young girl hurried over to her.

“You’re Allison, right?” The girl asked. “I’m Katherine! Robert said you were going to help out tonight; show me how to do everything?”

“Hello,” Allison replied warily, surprised at how eager the girl was. “Well, there’s not much to it; just serve everyone, clean up after them and collect their money when they get drinks.”

“That sounds easy.” Katherine smiled.

“Right… Why don’t you take care of that side of the tavern,” Allison said, gesturing to the right side of the tavern. “And I’ll take care of the other side.”

Katherine nodded and went to work.

Allison went behind the bar counter, took a couple of mugs and filled them with ale. She had spotted Greg and James as soon as she had walked in and saw that they hadn’t been served yet.

“Here you go, boys.” She said to them when she set the mugs down in front of them. Catching Greg’s eye, she smiled and walked away.

After her side of the tavern had been served, Allison stayed mostly behind the bar counter, cleaning and refilling mugs that people brought up to her. She couldn’t stop herself from taking short glances across the room every now and then to see if Greg was still there.

Katherine became quieter as the evening went on, her job keeping her busier than she had expected. Once she thought everyone was served, she went to the bar to stand near Allison.

“Tired?” Allison asked her.

“No.” The younger girl replied, but there was definitely a hint of fatigue to her voice.

Allison nodded and filled two more mugs. “Bring these over to the table by the window, please.”

Katherine took the mugs and walked away, moving slower than she had when she had first arrived that night.

Allison turned back to focusing on the people at the counter and saw Greg standing at the far end. “A refill, Dr. House?” She asked when she reached him.

He nodded and she took his mug. As she refilled it, he tried to come up with something to say, but he had planned on her being the talkative one - the way she usually was. He was surprised that she was being so quiet tonight.

“There you are.” She said sweetly, setting his mug on the counter.

He hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Where’s Elizabeth tonight?”

“Lisa’s watching her until I get home.” She replied, and then added, “I may leave soon though.”

He nodded - understanding - picked up his mug and headed back to his table.

It was not long after that when the tavern began to clear out a bit. Allison watched as Katherine became used to the pace of her job and soon had everything under control. After speaking with Robert, Allison left for the night.

On her way out, she noticed that the only people left were people she hardly ever spoke to. She frowned to herself when she noticed that Greg had left.

Stepping out in the night air sent a small chill through her body; she’d forgotten how cold the nights had started to become. She turned to head for home and mostly kept her eyes cast down to the ground as she went. As she reached the side road that led to her house, she looked up and immediately saw Greg standing on his front porch, leaning against one of the pillars that supported the porch’s roof.

She knew he wasn’t a man who would stand outside as if inviting people to approach him and make friendly conversation. No, he was waiting for her.

She passed the side road and went to him, her arms around herself to keep warm from the breeze. He caught her eye as she came closer and, suppressing the urge to run to him, she made it to him only a few moments later.

“Dr. House,” She greeted him, standing in front of his porch.

“Miss Cameron,” He replied. He saw the smile she was trying to hide and then noticed a chill run through her. “Would you like to come in, Allison?”

Nodding, she stepped up onto his porch. “Only for a little while… I can’t leave Lisa to care for Elizabeth all night.”

It was his turn to nod and he followed her inside.
