A few days later, Allison was ready to put her new plan into action. Since the night he had rejected her, she had been coming up with a new way to find out about him.
Tonight was the opening night of the traveling carnival and she thought that it might be a good chance to spy on him. Since the carnival sold drinks, Robert had closed the tavern and Elizabeth insisted on getting Robert to join them.
As soon as they got to the carnival, Elizabeth pulled Robert towards a game that she wanted to play. Allison looked around at all the people and the booths that offered food, drink or entertainment…
Dr. House had not wanted to come to the carnival but James had tried to convince him to go… and there was too much noise for him to go to bed or look through his books. He had already met up with James and gotten a mug of beer, but now he was standing around alone; James had seen a woman and had got to talk to her.
Looking around the small carnival, he saw Allison. She was a fair few booths away, watching a child play a game. It wasn’t Elizabeth so he thought she might be there alone. There was that beautiful, bright smile on her face and a moment later she was joined by Elizabeth and Robert. He looked away and took a drink of his beer. James returned to his side a moment later.
“I’ve had enough.” House said, keeping his eyes in the direction away from Allison. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
As he walked off, James looked around and caught Allison’s eye. They waved to each other and then he knew why House had gone home.
After they’d had their fun at the carnival, Elizabeth begged Allison to let her spend the night at Robert’s home. She’d stayed there before - more so right before their father died.
“No, lets say goodnight and let Robert have some peace at home.” Allison replied, taking Elizabeth’s hand as the younger girl pouted.
Robert laughed. “She can spend the night if she wants.”
Elizabeth’s face lit up.
“Besides, I have time to myself every night. Let you have some peace tonight.” He added.
Elizabeth tugged on Allison’s arm excitedly.
Trying not to show how much she would be enjoying the time to herself, Allison agreed. Elizabeth hugged Allison’s legs and stood next to Robert.
“Behave yourself.” Allison told her sister sternly. Her reply was a nod.
They said goodnight and Robert and Elizabeth headed for his home. Allison felt a bit excited because, with her new time alone, she could try and find out more about Dr. House…

Greg returned once more to James’s home to say goodbye.
“Where are you going to go?” James asked.
“I don’t know yet.” Greg replied, sitting in one of James’s chairs in the front room; the windows were still all covered.
“Alright… how are you going to get to… wherever it is you’re going?”
“I… don’t know yet.” Greg said again.
“Well, you plan sounds fool proof so far.”
“If you have any suggestions, I’d love to her them.” Greg muttered.
James sighed. “They know you’re still in town.”
“Who could go far with a hurt leg?”
“Wherever it is that you’re going, you should get going now.” James said and as Greg stood up, there came a knock on the door.
The two men looked at each other for a moment, saying their silent goodbyes and thinking they’d never see one another ever again. Greg left for the final time out the side door and Wilson answered the front door to a sobbing woman.
“James, you have to tell them where he is…”

The only way that Allison could think of to start off her next investigative plan would be to go by his home. She had seen Dr. House leave the carnival, but that had been a couple hours earlier, so she wasn’t completely surprised when she saw that he wasn’t home yet.
‘He’s probably with James somewhere.’ She thought as she stepped back from peeking into the house through the side window. She blew a puff of air out of her mouth, frustrated by her curiosity. Standing there for a moment, she tried to think of what she should do next. She was on the verge of giving up when she heard voices.
Keeping in the shadows, Allison inched toward the road and stopped half-way there.
It was James and Dr. House and they seemed to be having an important discussion… again. She could barely hear what they were saying as they stopped at Dr. House’s front door, standing there for a moment.
Allison backed away from the road and looked around for something that might help her to get closer without being noticed. The two men had started to argue and James said they shouldn’t be talking out in the open where anyone could hear them. That’s when she knew what to do.
She snuck over to the side door and started to jiggle the door knob. When she had been younger, Robert and Eric would play tricks on the doctor that lived there. They would sneak in through the side door, while she stood watch outside. She’d seen them get that door open more times than she could remember. The door pushed open and she snuck inside as quietly as she could.
James and Dr. House were already inside; she could hear them in the front room. She looked around his living space for a place to hide in case they came back there. The only place she came up with was the tall wooden wardrobe that stood against the wall by the foot of his bed.
Their voices began to get louder, so she stepped inside the wardrobe. She kept the door open just enough to see; a strip of light shining in on her face.
“Why do you always have to bring this up?” Dr. House asked as he came through the doorway from the front room.
“Because if you forget about it, then you’ll get caught.” James said as he followed. “Don’t you understand? They won’t just put you in jail, they’ll-“
“I know.” House cut him off angrily, sitting down at the small table by the doorway. “Do you think I could not know? You don’t go one day without letting me forget, as if I could.”
James was quiet and, inside the wardrobe, Allison moved slightly to try to see more of the room. Dr. House was just on the outside of her visual range.
“What was that?” James asked suddenly.
Allison put her hand over her mouth to keep from breathing too loudly; had she made a noise that she hadn’t heard herself?
“What was what? I didn’t hear anything.” House replied.
James hesitated, listening for any sounds. “I guess it was nothing.”
“Your paranoia is annoying me.” House said, rubbing his forehead. After a moment, he looked right at James. “I know what I did. It was an accident-“
“No one would see it that way.” James commented. “Especially Stacy.”
House and Allison both looked down; House in regret and Allison in sadness.
‘So there is another woman…’ she thought, nodding to herself. ‘Of course he wouldn’t want me; he has someone else.’
“Well it is her fault. If she hadn’t-…” he took a deep breath. “I reacted the way any man would.”
“You killed Mark!” James exclaimed.
Allison gasped quietly and put her hand back over her mouth…
