Word of the Week: encephaloduroarteriosynangioplasty
WTF is it? It's the preferred method for surgical management of Moyamoya syndrome, which is characterized by progressive stenosis of the internal carotid artery, which leads to development of collateral vascularization originating from the external carotid and the circle of Willis. These vessels are weak and leaky, and put the patient at high risk of stroke. Moyamoya syndrome is the #1 cause of cerebrovascular disease in children in Japan, affecting 3 out of 100,000 children there.
