Oh, I hope I am not stealing zephre's thunder but: it's REALLY IMPORTANT that you don't use polyester batting for a potholder. Many years ago I made a decorative "potholder" for a fellow quilter friend; it was never meant to actually "pot-hold". She forgot, held it over her gas range to retrieve a saute pan, and WHOOSH. The "potholder" flamed right up before our eyes in just seconds. We were actually very grateful for this lesson, because we were planning baby quilts together, had bought polyester batting for them, and swore that off instantly. Since that day all our quilts get cotton batting. "Warm & Natural" is a wonderful cotton batting product. I would use three layers and perhaps use cotton flannel to back my potholder, for extra protection.

How big is it? And what did you use in the middle? That's where I ran into trouble. I thought the ones I made were thick enough, but they weren't.

I usually recycle old wool or cotton blankets for batting.
