the plot thickens. curdles, perhaps

Man, reading Dorothy Dunnett makes me mean.
And making a family tree this time really seriously helped me figure out my plot difficulties. I had to figure out who was alive at this one point in the past, and in the course of figuring that out I discovered a rivalry between royal princes that led directly to the events which form the crucible from which our villain emerges, battered and obsessed. Hurray!
I had been having a lot of trouble fleshing out the villain - why is he obsessed with ending this particular family's existence, not just their hold on power? Where did the fixation begin, and what grudge could be so great that he jeopardizes his own country and family in pursuit of vengeance?
Well, now I know.
It's ugly. And bloody. And politicky. And there is a lot of dynastic maneuvering. And seven princesses aged 5-18.
I'm very excited, but my genealogy is rapidly growing beyond 8.5x11 typing paper. Bring me my wall of butcher paper, three colors of marker, and a set of post-its!
