The voice was instantly recognizable to Lana.
“So, I need a favor.”
Turning around in the lobby of the courthouse, Lana said, “Kalinda, what a surprise. I haven't seen you for weeks - I wondered where you had been. What's this favor?”
A slight smile graced Kalinda's lips as she took one step closer. Lana stood firm, waiting for her to get to the heart of the request. Kalinda peeked at her ever-present orange notebook and finally replied, “Frankie Imbruno.”
“The gangster? That Frankie Imbruno?”
“Yes. What does the illustrious FBI have on his recent activity?” Kalinda's question was accompanied by a tilt of the head. No preamble, no explanation, just straight to the point.
Lana paused for a second, then grabbed Kalinda's elbow and guided her to a relatively secluded corner of the vast room. “Why should I give you anything?”
“Because you're 'my friend'.” Kalinda's words immediately brought Lana back to the Arkin case and the last time they had seen one another..
Gathering her thoughts and coming back to the present, Lana answered, “That's true, but it seems the only time I ever see you is when you need something.”
Kalinda shrugged her shoulders as her only response.
Lana relented and asked, “Anything in particular I should be looking for?”
“Large financial transactions. Recent discontent amongst the ranks. Those sort of things.”
“Alright, I'll see what I can dig up.”
Kalinda's “Okay” was spoken over her shoulder as she turned to head towards the exit of the building. Lana stood there, motionless except for a rueful smile adorning her face.

A knock at Lana's office roused her from an intense study of paperwork on one of her current cases. Leaning back in her chair to stretch her tired back, she raised her eyes from the tall, dark boots, to the short skirt, to the purple shirt, and finally up to Kalinda's neutral expression.
“Ah, you must be here for another favor.”
“Actually, I came to give you a tip.”
“Come in, sit.” Lana gestured to the chair in front of her desk. Kalinda proceeded to close the door and settle herself into the utilitarian seat.
“It concerns a Mr. Roy Taylor. It appears he was the person that leaked Peter Florrick's tapes...and he was working for Glenn Childs.”
“How did you come by this?” Lana questioned.
“Research...for a case,” was the terse reply.
“That's all? What am I supposed to do with this tip?”
“Investigate...you are still working on the Childs case, aren't you?” Lana ignored the sarcasm and simply said, “Yes.”
Kalinda rose from her seated position and gave Lana a pointed look, “If you need any more motivation, just give me a call.” With that she walked out of the office, aware of Lana's gaze following her the whole way.

A big win for Alicia resulted in celebratory drinks with Kalinda. It didn't happen after every case, but often enough that they fell into a familiar routine. First came the shots of tequila - with requisite salt and lime - then they would finish with a bottle of imported beer or two.
Conversation usually revolved around the just completed case and then oftentimes progressed to Alicia's personal life. Peter, Will, the kids, her meddlesome mother-in-law - they were all fodder for discussion, but Kalinda was still able to keep from disclosing much of anything.
The recent case resulted in a large settlement, which was good news for the firm. As such, Alicia was feeling pretty good and decided to once again try prying into Kalinda's private life.
Going for subtle, or as subtle as she could manage after consuming her fair share of alcohol, Alicia asked, “What the hell is new in the world of Kalinda?” Alicia took a swallow from her bottle, but tasted mostly foam as she realized it was empty.
“Alright, I can see you've hit your limit. Let's get you home.”
“What? I didn't even ask why you've seemed distracted lately.” Alicia's tone got more excited, “A new man...or a new girlfriend even? That's it, you are seeing somebody.”
“No, I'm not. It's nothing.” Kalinda put her hand on Alicia's shoulder as she walked around behind her, “I'll be right back,” and headed towards the restrooms.
In the dimly light hallway Kalinda nearly collided with a woman coming out of the bathroom. “I'm sorry,” the taller woman apologized.
“Shit,” Kalinda muttered under her breath. Then, raising her voice, “Lana, it's me, Kalinda.”
“Kalinda! What are you doing here?”
“Alicia and I were celebrating her victory in court today. I've never seen you here before.”
“Bad blind date.”
“That's too bad.”
“Don't worry,” Lana visibly brightened, “my night just got much better.”
Pressing forward, Lana backed her up until she met the wall. Putting her hands around Kalinda's neck, she tilted her head and leaned down. When there was no sign of resistance Lana brought her lips to Kalinda's in a gentle kiss. Kalinda encircled her arms around Lana's waist and licked her lower lip. As their passion built, Lana moved one hand to tangle in Kalinda's hair and the other dropped to fondle her breast.
A need for air broke them apart and they each took a moment to gather themselves. “This was a mistake. I've gotta go,” was the abrupt comment from Kalinda as she returned to the bar. She went straight to the bartender to pay for their drinks, ignoring Alicia as she came over.
“What happened to you? You're a mess.” Still being ignored, Alicia caught sight of Lana making her way out with purposeful strides. Her inebriated mind didn't take long to come to a conclusion. “Oh my God! I knew it.”
Finally finished with the bartender, Kalinda said, “Good night Alicia.” She left, making sure to keep her distance from Lana's disappearing figure.

The date had taken a while to come to fruition, but Kalinda had finally relented.
“If you had said we would be eating inside this time, that might have saved some anguish.”
Lana laughed, “But you still won't consider coming to work for the FBI, right?”
“No.” Kalinda continued eating her dessert, enjoying the ensuing silence.
Looking at her watch, Lana reminded her, “We better get going, or we'll be late for the show.”
“Right. We wouldn't want that.” Lana took the comment in stride, knowing that Kalinda's presence and agreement was a huge step in their burgeoning relationship.
They put on their coats to protect against the chill fall air. As they walked out of the restaurant Lana put her arm around Kalinda's shoulder and after a moment, Kalinda slipped her arm about Lana's side.
