Yesterday I got back to America's Dairyland after about 10 months across the pond. When I left Londinium, it was nicely cool and dry, with the ever-present but never-too-serious threat of a sprinkle or two.
Today in 'Sconsin, it is about 35 C, pretty much the daily average for this time of year in Western Japants, and just as humid - outside it is like trying to breathe Jello. As opposed to the houseflies & bumbly-bees in Engamaland, here I spotted at least 9 varieties of insect life in under 30 seconds. And after I ran back into the air-conditioned house in the wake of a particularly nasty-looking wasp, two young deer came munching away at the undergrowth at the edge of our yard. They have now been replaced by a small bunny that has apparently been ninja-ing his or her way under the electrified fence to terrorize the bean plants in Mom's garden.
Tomorrow I'ma take Dad's Jeep [it's a REAL Jeep, y'all - I'm talkin' Wrangler, aaaaaaw yeeyuh ( u w u)] down the interstate a bit to catch up with a childhood friend who still lives very close by to where we grew up & just got married 'bout a month ago :3 Belated congratulations to A & R, and more recent contratumalations to J, my former college roomie at Neuter Doom, & her new manservant husband S, whose wedding was Friday in Chicagoland! It was a mini-ND reunion at the reception, with fun times, much booty-shaking, and even more Journey & Bon Jovi, the real patron saints of our alma mater.
I continue to be both impressed and slightly dumbstruck at both the portion sizes & the waistbands of Midwestern America. Over 50% of the people on the buses & trains with me in Chi-town could've used two seats. Visually it was very much back to black-and-white; gone are any traces of petite South Asians and their propensity to divvy up foodstuffs into quantities smaller than the volume of my head.
aaaaand another deer's back, checkin' out Mom's rhubarb plants but deciding (wisely) not to go for 'em X3
