Marvelous piece of narrative fiction by David Remnick in The New Yorker three days ago about
one patient's pre-Sandy experience at the NYU Hospital, subsequent rescue during Sandy, and post-storm recovery and next steps at Columbia Hospital.
The poiece talks about how doctors, nurses, EMTs, medical students, and everyone else working in the hospitals helped carry patients down flights on stairs (some babies had to have manual breathing done for them from the ninth floor down) to the row of ambulances manned by volunteers from as far away as California and Texas.
Medical personnel are always among the first responders and often the last responders in a tragedy. To those who ever begrudge their high salaries, take note.
