Cockney Slang
Must be the cockney blood in me, but gor molly I do love the old cockney swears. They're all euphemisms (words used to replace more vulgar words) By the way, "cockney" traditionally applies only to those born within earshot of the bells of St Mary-le-Bow, Cheapside (on the eastern side of London). Here's a short list of my favorites and the vulgar term it represents:
- Gor blimey: God blind me.
- Gadzooks: God's hooks (reference to the nails of the crucifixion)
- Stewth: God's truth
- Zounds: God's wounds
- Dickens: slang term for the devil. Such as: "What the dickens is she talking about?" or "You'll go to the dickens for that."
- Gor molly isn't actually an old cockney swear. It's just something I say sometimes.
