Ya Mon

Since we had a really good year at work my boss decided to do something he's wanted to do for a long time: take the crew to Jamaica.

Because of this I spent almost a week at a resort in Jamaica for free. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

And even better, Kira could came along for the price of airfare. In short, it was amazing. This was my first time out of the country and I'd like to think I made the most of it. I fulfilled a long-standing dream and went scuba diving. We went out to a coral reef and Kira saw a nurse shark. Unfortunately there was too much sand and crap kicked up and I didn't see it. But I did see a really big blowfish when I was out snorkeling the next day.

One of the days we went out into the island across Cockpit Country (which is really fun after reading "The Dragon Delasangre" novels). We went down to the Windsor Caves and hiked down into a cavern that hasn't been touched by man. Well, people have been down there, but there were no lights or handrails or anything. And there were hundreds of bats up above us. We went through a number of chambers, including the Big Room where you can hear an echo go on for a good long time, and the Slip-in-Shit room (did I mention the bats? I ruined a pair of shoes in the cave, but it was worth it).

After the cave we traveled North, which was very, very hard. The road we were on (see picture below) had long since turned into a goat path and was quickly becoming something even goats wouldn't walk down. It took a long time to get through, but our driver rocked. We ended up at a bird sanctuary. Here we saw the national bird of Jamaica, the swallow-tailed hummingbird or Doctor Bird. These guys are beautiful (again see pics) and they'd come up and perch on your finger to eat out of a little bottle of sugar water.

And then there was the booze. And it was free. As most of you know I'm not a big drinker and am something of a lightweight. Lets just say that I'm not as much of a lightweight after this trip as I was before it. Kira, in her previous trips to the tropics, had discovered a grapefruit soda called Ting. It's quite good and they had it on tap at the resort. After a couple days Kira had the thought, what if we mixed Ting with vodka? It wasn't long before Ting mixed with booze was the official drink of most of my co-workers. The Tingerita is my personal favorite.

This was an incredible experience and there's the chance of going back again if work continues going well. Now for the snapshots, I'll put them behind a cut since there's a bunch. Enjoy and peace!
