And I get a lot of "Well, you haven't read the other books, so you can't really judge the series..." but that's one and a half MILLION words! The entire Lord of the Rings trilogy was less than 500 thousand! I finished the first book and know the plots of the other ones, and if that's not enough for me to have a valid opinion, then that's just not being fair.
I've only met one other person who read the first novel and (like me) recognized that there was a lot there for people to be into, but just wasn't into it.
Also, I think that the question of whether GRRM's work is actually high fantasy or not is interesting - because I realize that even though I am a big fan of Tolkien, who is generally regarded as having created the genre (or at least being its first big success story), I don't really enjoy any of the other big-name writers, like Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks, or Steven Erikson. So it could be that I don't like high fantasy!
But questions of genre-definition may be a bit far afield from this discussion.
I appreciate your response! And for taking so much time to do it, too. I totally understand how someone could have a different reaction than I do to the books, and to really enjoy them, but I just don't, and I don't think that's going to change.
I'm glad we can still be friends!
