It's terribly entriguing to try to figure out how to play a game when you don't really know what you're doing and the commands are in Japanese... I just read a short wikipedia article and that didn't help at all. XD
As a rule, the cards with an animal or a banner are better. Whenever you get a combination, you can either take the points and end the round or "koikoi". Koikoi'ing is basically doubling. You get better points if you get another combination before the opponent gets one. Because if the opponents beats you to it you get no points.
I'm totally addicted, and plan to get myself a hanafuda deck so I can play for realz. If you like, I can type you a up a basic set of combinations and corresponding points.
Yeah, that would be awesome. I'm mainly trying to figure out what cards match when. I understand the basic rule of matching either the flower or the month, but sometimes they don't take a card (and get put on the table as a discard) when I thought they would match. This is the most confusing part to me so far.
Is there a site where we could just play together? That would be ideal.
Oh and I totally just saw us sitting on the floor of a ryokan playing this game in March when we finally get some time to hang out in Japan. Drinking Sake of course, how fun does that sound? XD
Think I pretty much figured it out... though I don't 100% understand all of the pairings yet. However, I did manage to beat the computer in about 30 minutes. ^^;
You know me too well... @o@ That's an impressive graph! You've gotten some great hands and won every round.
I'll have to study the rules of Koi koi ve-ery carefully and incorporate every obscure combination just to last a round against you in March. Or just get you really drunk before we play... ^.^;

Here's a flash Koi koi application, if you want to try it. I have to warn you though, it's terribly addictive.
