Once upon a time, there was a Prince of China named Wu Fan. Like any other prince, he’s blessed with everything a man would like to have. A perfect family background, intelligence and appearance. Not to mention that he’s raised well by the Queen made him loved by the country. His life was an epitome of perfection.

Until one day he fell sick. The best doctors were called but none could figure out his disease. The Queen never stopped praying for his son since then.

“ He’s not sick,” The Oracle of the Empire eventually showed up one moonless night in front of the Queen at the shrine.

“ Then what’s wrong with him? “ The Queen asked between her sobs. The Oracle helped her to stand and both sat on the circle table.

“Prince Wu Fan is the reincarnation of the Dragon God,” she began straight to the point. “ Dragon God may be able to live alone, but it often happens that his life won’t last for long. He always needs the support from his partner, the Fenghuang.”

The Queen rubbed her own hands. She took a moment before replied. “ Do you mean, we have to find the Fenghuang?”

The oracle nodded.   “ But,” She frowned. “ I’m really sorry to tell that there’s a problem. The Fenghuang isn’t here,”

Prince Wu Fan’s condition was only getting worse by days. In span of just two weeks, he already lost his whole heart.

“ Your Majesty,” the Oracle bowed when she saw The Queen at the same place two weeks after their first meeting. She looked worn out and a lot thinner but the good news she brought was obvious only by looking at her face. That smile was blinding.  “ I’ve got a vision. The Fenghuang is in Joseon,”

The announcement of Prince of China was looking for his bride was already spread all over Joseon by the time he arrived at the said country. Both countries had already been in good relationship for long enough, therefore Joseon offered a help with arranging a political marriage between them. Women with high status such as daughters of ministers and big merchants were allowed to be bride candidates of the Prince . They’re then invited to the Palace and got chance to show their charms.

Lu Han, the Chinese Warlord’s son,  the Prince’s bestfriend who’s already considered as his brother, found this really amusing. He knew, it’s clearer than the clearest crystal that his ‘brother’ didn’t even have the slightest interest in those women.

“ Yo Wu Fan, don’t you think this’s boring?” he said abruptly one morning, closing the manhwa he found a day before. “ How about we go out?”

The Prince lifted his face. Sometimes the older man forgot how the face looked like before the disease took away all his friend’s fun sides. “ No.”

Lu Han sighed. “ Fine then.” He shrugged then got up. “ You’re not fun anymore, you know. I’ll be going with Yixing. Don’t look for me. Bye.” He made a salute pose before turning his heels towards the door.

One.

Two.

Three.

“ Wait.”

A victorious smirk appeared across Lu Han’s face. “ What?” He asked without turning his back.

“ Nothing. I just want to remind you there’re gisaeng houses out there. You may get scouted. Bye.”

Lu Han scoffed. There’s no such thing. He’s one of the manliest man in their homeland, there’s no way he’d be mistakenly as a girl in that country whose some of its men were even prettier than the real women.

Too bad Yixing was busy discussing things with the people from Ministry of Trade and Industry he couldn’t join Lu Han. Not that made the bored man gave up. He borrowed some normal clothes from a servant and went out alone.

“ No much difference, I see.” Lu Han mumbled to himself when he saw the crowd once he stepped out of the gate and entered the market. People were busy passing by, making transactions here and there. Kids playing around, girls buying accessories and sellers trying to get their things sold. Lu Han spent his day roaming around, buying souvenirs, filling his stomach with all street snacks. He found the people were nice, he even got a free velvet pouch for his singing show.

It’s already dark when he decided to go back to the palace. The shops were closing down and the busy street slowly became really quiet after the sun disappeared. He regretted didn’t come with horse now his legs were tired. On his way back to the Palace, the corner of his eyes caught something. He didn’t think he saw the place before back when the sun was still up. Lu Han only needed three seconds to figure it out. With light beaming from inside, drunk men, and pretty women at the gate and even more inside, it just screamed gisaeng house loudly, clearly to the thin night air. He decided to give it a go. Moreover, he needed to rest.

“ Oh, look who’s here,” one of pretty women said as he stepped forward. “ Is there anything we can help you with, pretty?”

Lu Han frowned. He hated it whenever he’s called pretty. He’s a man and nowhere near feminine. “ Um, yeah,”

“ Name?” Another women asked. Lu Han raised his brows. “ We’ll tell him that you already come,”

“ Tell who?”

“ Our guest, you’re picking up your master, aren’t you?”

It took a moment before Lu Han bursted into laughter. Now it’s time for the women to wonder. “ No, I’m not picking up anyone. I need a place to rest,”

The women exchanged glances. “But-“

“ Show me your best one,” He raised a bunch of golds from his pouch and that’s all he needed to get the women brought him in. They showed him one woman to another, all giggling when they saw him and suddenly Lu Han knew how the Prince felt.

“ Is there anyone you interested in?”

“ Not y-“ Lu Han let his answer hung in the air as his eyes landed on someone who’s just passing not too far from him with hands busy holding blankets. She’s sweating and dirty, she didn’t primp nor wore pretty dress like the others, but she’s definitely glowing. “ Her. I want her,” he said.

“ Her? But she’s not even a gisaeng, she’s only-”

“ Her,” Lu Han insisted. “ Get her for me, I’ll be waiting in my room,”

Lu Han ordered the girl only to watch him sleeping. When he woke up at dawn, he found the girl sat at the corner of the room, looking down at her knees. She’s already dressed up.  Lu Han stretched his back, yawning. He crossed his legs, eyes never left the girl who eventually looked up at him after long silence filled the room.

His eyes really didn’t deceive him now he could see her clearly under the light. She’s only unpolished before because she’s obviously a diamond now.

“ I’m really sorry, but I really can’t,” she said abruptly.

Lu Han flashed a small smile. “ I know. What’s your name?”

The woman hesitated for seconds before whispered her name. “ Seohyun,”

“ What a pretty name,” the smile didn’t leave Lu Han’s face, “ by the way, you can go sleep. Relax, I won’t do anything to you,” He got up, making his way to a small cabinet at the other corner to find additional bed or blanket but found nothing.

Being raised well too, he gave up the only bed and blanket for the woman.

“ Wait,” a shade of faint pink creeped upon her pale cheeks. “ You… I… it’s cold outside,” Lu Han waited. “ I-if you don’t mind, we can share,”

He let out a chuckle. “ Are you sure?”

“ Just please don’t-“

“ Yeah, I know,”

Both slept at each edge of the bed, leaving distance in the middle and none changed their position until then. Lu Han woke up first. He gathered his soul as his eyes watched the woman slept peacefully.

“ Seohyun?” He tested her name. “ See you again,”

Prince Wu Fan found himself in a gisaeng house days later. “ What are we going to do here, Lu Han?” His tone was as flat as the older man could remember.

“ You need to loosen up, Your Highness,” Lu Han emphasized the last two words. “ You’re going to marry soon, this is the last chance you can play around and enjoy youth,”

After much thoughts, the Prince eventually agreed.

They spent some nights there. Lu Han never changed his order, it’s always Seohyun. He loved watching Seohyun played the Gayageum and she tried to teach him. The Prince felt neglected. He left the two alone, gave himself some time to walk around the apparently big place.

“ Look! Awww, so pretty,”

“ Ohh, I feel offended!”

“ Oh my, he’s blushing! So cute!”

The Prince stopped in his tracks. A group of gisaengs was gathering around something on a pavilion at the back garden.

“ Ahh, I’m not pretty!”

Someone, a woman, ran out of the circle, hanging her head down, therefore she couldn’t see Wu Fan who was just right in front of her and bumped into him. She looked up and the Prince’s blood stopped rushing inside.

She’s the prettiest girl he ever seen, even beat all those candidates back in the Palace, with those innocent doe eyes, pink cheeks and red lips.

“ I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” she bowed for times before excusing herself.

Wu Fan finally found a purpose for his visits. He’d wander around the place at night only to find the girl. None of his attemps succeed. He never met her again until one morning, after being harassed by a gisaeng he didn’t even remember ordering, right at the same pavilion.

She’s alone that time, no one surrounding her like before. She didn’t wear pretty colorful dress, the one called hanbok, like any other females in that place, but instead a familiar blue clothes Wu Fan’s sure ever looked before somewhere at the Palace. There’s a music instrument in front of her. She smiled towards it, taking some fresh air then began to play. She looks like possessed hitting one side of the instrument with a stick and the other with her palm but still graceful nonetheless. Wu Fan was impressed.

“ Yah, Park Chanyeol stop being so noisy! It’s still morning!” A gisaeng said out of nowhere. The girl immediately stopped playing.

“ Uh, good morning noona! Sorry! ” She flashed the woman a toothy grin. She directly picked up her instrument and made her way down from the pavilion. She was busy with her stick that time she bumped into Wu Fan again.

The scene was almost identical. Their eyes met and she apologized, repeatedly bowing her back. But it’d been hard for Wu Fan to finally meet her again he didn’t want to miss this chance.

He didn’t know what to say though. His brain stopped functioning all of a sudden. “ What’s the name of the instrument?” is all what slipped out his mouth.

“ Instrument? Oh, this is Janggu,”

He wondered how a person’s smile could be that bright. He silently thought if he could smile like that too, if his face muscle still working. Wu Fan couldn’t think any more questions to prolong the conversation so he only nodded when she excused herself again. Wu Fan regretted his action.

“ There’s a girl, yes, a girl, she looks barely fifteen, can play an instrument called xangjie? -I don’t know- what’s her name?” He asked Seohyun right after he found her.

“ Xangjue?” Seohyun furrowed her brows. “ Do you mean janggu? Like an instrument with two sides, played by hitting it with stick and palm?”

“ Yes,”

“ Ah, I know….there’s only a person who can play janggu here, it’s Chanyeol,  but that person is a he. “
