Sorry the changes of the season are knocking about...
I too had a very odd day, serving lunch at the only cash OK dinning facilities on campus. The rest of VA Tech is attempting to become meal pass only and more automated about entry to the all you can eat facilities. But we must also be available to the public and we do cater to the extremely picky...we will make a Absolute Vegan lunch plate, or something for those who are trying to follow a restricted diet for health reasons.
Anyway...I don't know if you're aware that one year ago VT had 32 students and faculty gunned down by a mad man, a student gone berserk. For some reason I tasked myself to see the students as individuals, all of them, not just the freakishly handsome ones of the ugly ones. Those are too easy. The asia kids are tricky. glasses? hair cut? bad skin? dark, Light, accent, american..names that repeat and have no constants...americanize first names that make NO sense what's so ever...
They all had tearstained eyes and bad sunburns yesterday and gave my blessings and MUCH advise about handling a good scorching to them all. Not as many cashier platitudes and meaningless bits of BS. I burst into tears a dozen times, especially when I realized I'd just up the tab for lunch-dinner for a grieving family, teammate, classmate, or student of those missing.
I felt the earth move under my feet and the sun cross the heavens as I worked 12 hours to make my small part of this 1st anniversary run smoothly for all the Hokies...
