WELP. Fun times in medical land for me. FUN TIMES INDEED.
I've had a period for roughly a month now, with increasingly heavy flow. Last Monday afternoon I started getting horrific cramps almost as bad a the ones that sent me to the ER this past spring. So, I scheduled a doctor's appt for Wednesday, with the same PA that
ryumaxwell goes to. We talked about some stuff, they sucked some blood into tubes for hormone and thyroid panels.
And yesterday, I got a call. My hormones were fine...but the thyroid levels were very low. Huh. The PA faxed a script over to my pharmacy for synthetic thyroid hormone, and I need to go back and get the levels checked again in 6-8 weeks. So I am apparently hypothyroid and never knew it.
When I told my mother this over the phone, she said, "oh yeah, your dad has that. And grandma." And my reply was "WELL THAT WOULD'VE BEEN GOOD TO KNOW, SO I COULD'VE PUT IT ON MY FAMILY MEDICAL HISTORY AND MAYBE THEY WOULD'VE CHECKED IT YEARS AGO." Pffft, not important I guess!
I've been looking over lists of symptoms for hypothyroidism, which can have multiple causes, and quite a few of them match up. Depression. Mood swings. Fatigue. Dizziness when standing up from sitting or laying down (all the damn time). Headaches. Abnormal menstrual cycles. Sluggishness.
HMMMMMMM.
FML.
