Junk

Jan 16, 2007 13:49

Sometimes I'm amazed by how much junk we accumulate over lifetime. School trophys, concert tickets, first sweetheart's love letter, 20 year old trip maps, old pictures of people we barely remember. Each one of us has a little box of stuff from over the years, from different eras ( Read more... )

I know, I hate it. I moved around a LOT as a kid, so my "things" were the only stable thing in my life. So I can't throw anything away. I figure I'll have thjem buried with me or something. Me and all my crap, in a grave.

No no no. You are totally missing the point.

You save all that shit so that when you have a captive i mean guest you can drag out the boxes and make them witness your entire life through the trinkets and snapshots you've managed to drag with you.

like so...

"Here's me with my grammy, just before she died."
"And there I am with Bowzer. no wait! That was Shep! I always get those two dogs messed up. Ha!"
"And this is the cool piece of amethyst i found on Mt. Shasta."
"That's my hospital bracelet when i had my appendix remoooved"
"That's Bob in my brand new 1976 Ford Pinto. man I loved that car. Par-ty!"
"There's Bob again. huh. Bob."
"This is a nail that I stepped on in 3rd grade."

"No wait! Don't go! i won't go backwards no more, I promise!"

seriously. make people witness your life. it's like being immortal in a cheap, transient sort of way.

people I knopw still dread my Brown Photo Album...

I think this could be classified as extra special cruelty and should be punishable by making you watch all reruns of some horrible sitcom from 70s

we'll want to share things with our kids... keep things in order to help us remember who we are and what we're about on those days when we feel like we're out of juice... when we're old and have alzhimers, we'll want to remember... right?

nope, I don't think we want to share it with our kids, we want to share it with older selfves. Did you ever cared about your parents or grandparents junk, unless it's valuable?
I understand pictures could be fun to look at, but the rest....

After we're gone, it becomes what it really is - junk, essentially reducing our lives to nothing.

Yeah, but after you're gone...everything is reduced to nothing--as far as you're concerned. The meanings and values you attribute to your objects are completely subjective (which goes for ~every~ possession, by the way.) So enjoy them! Revel in that mushy feeling you get from old love letters!

And don't fret. I doubt that ~everything~ you leave behind will be considered junk. You never know...some kinky archaeologist 1000 years from now might get off on some of it.

P.S. Isn't it about time you friend me.

you see, that's the thing, I don't have mushy feelings about these stuff, I just wonder sometimes, why do I even keep it.

p.s. sorry. just did.
