At last! A reality TV show I can actually enjoy watching. No, I'm not talking about
Big Brother and the fact that it's filled with mostly women. It still doesn't interest me.
Despite my deep-seated seemingly irrational hatred of reality TV shows (note the 'seemingly' part) once in a while something comes along that mildly entertains me. I rarely follow them for more than an episode or two, or in the case of
Who Wants To Be A Superhero? I watched the end few episodes out of boredom and curiosity. Even as I write this the reality show that has me laughing loudest is intentional and showing on Paramount Comedy 1.
Last Comic Standing is a show seeking to find the world's next funny man - or woman. This must be the first time it's been on UK TV because I certainly don't recognise the name and this is the fifth season they're showing tonight. Probably because, unlike previous seasons, they attempt to put a more international flare into the show by going to London, Montreal and Sydney as well as US States.
The premise is simple: a bunch of auditions are held before a panel of three comedians/talent scouts. Those that make the audition come back that night in front of an audience to work their material. From each location some of them are chosen to go through to the next round. I like stand up comedy, so although you know they're going to show you some of the ones that didn't make it (and some of them are really bad) you still get to watch some rapid-fire stand up and you can't ask for better.
There's still a heavy bias towards American comics, and naturally for a network show the material needs to be fairly clean - at least to the point that it's not vulgar and the comic isn't swearing every other word.
Finally, a show to laugh at that doesn't make me want to scrape out my brain with a spoon.
