The villa was silent, so silent Evangeline though that perhaps she had gone deaf. In the dead of night with her finger loosely wrapped around the trigger of the sniper rifle she waited for her orders. The target was standing under a street lamp across the road, a lit cigarette perched between his lips. The shot was already lined up, and Eva now just waited for her headset to crackle to life, and for Vitorio to tell her to pull the trigger.
A floor above Evangeline her handler, Vitorio waited for the right moment, his breath nearly held in anticipation. This was his first field mission with Eva, he mentally crossed his fingers and hoped that she was ready. He had faith in her, she was mentally strong, and physically she was in prime condition thanks to the cybernetic components worked into her body. It was almost surreal that almost six months ago the raven haired girl a floor below had been dying in a hospital in Milan. Vitorio still wondered if he did the right thing by choosing Eva as his partner. It wasn’t that she wasn’t a good choice, she was. A fast learner and one of the most personable girls Vitorio was more than happy with Eva as a person. It was the morality of the entire project that kept him up at night. Was it really right for the Agency to play God like they do? On the other had Evangeline now had a new life, new friends, and above all she had a future. Vitorio could only hope that it was a bright future, lord knows all the girls of the Agency deserve it.
Snapping out of his thoughts Vitorio gave the order to fire, his voice so soft that it could have been mistaken for the wind, but to Eva’s ears it was a loud and clear order. With a soft click and a muffled bang the target was successfully eliminated. Both of them let out a breath they didn’t know they were holding.
“Good work Eva, I’ll meet you downstairs”.
“Yes sir”. Quickly packing up her gear Eva hurried downstairs. Standing in the foyer she listening to the soft footfalls of her fratello as he descended from the third floor. From the soft murmurs coming from above it was safe to assume that their success was being called in, and the cleanup crew would be here soon. Evangeline fought back the urge to yawn. It was nearly two in the morning and she was beginning to long for her bed.
The footsteps stopped and Eva glanced back at the stairs. Vitorio had paused at the bottom, his gaze meeting Eva’s, he wanted to take in the moment. It rather macabre how much pride he felt in that moment. And yet the feeling was there, filling him to the brim. He couldn’t help but smile.
“We’ll have to celebrate tomorrow”.
“Is that really okay? I mean, I just killed a man,” Eva fingered the strap of her bag. Her rifle was clever concealed within a run-of-the-mill guitar bag.
“I’m not sure what’s okay anymore. Things are really shades of gray in this line of work. Are you proud of yourself?” Vitorio slowly walked up behind her, pausing when she was within arm’s reach.
“I am…but I feel like that’s wrong. I think I’m proud of myself because you’re proud of me. But…now I’m a killer…do you think any less of me?” Eva’s voice wavered softly.
“No. I trained you for this moment, and you executed your mission flawlessly. I’m proud of you Eva,” he reached out and ruffled her thick, inky locks.
She turned around and smiled up at him, even in the dim light she could make out his thin features. His dark curls were falling in his eyes again, and as always Eva had the greatest urge to brush them again. Is that what a real sister would do? Sometimes Vitorio helped her with her hair, so maybe it was the right thing to do. Standing on her tiptoes she brushed a few curly locks away from his long lashes. Vitorio chuckled and finished what she started.
“Think I should get it cut?” he chuckled.
“N-No! I like it as it is,” Eva bit her lip, hoping she hadn’t offending her fratello.
“Then it says,” he smiled. Outside the sound of a van pulling up the drive caught the attention of the duo. Eva quickly turned towards the doorway, putting herself between Vitorio and whatever lay just outside. She knew it was just the cleanup crew, but something in the back of her mind kept her on her toes anyways.
Vitorio seemed amused by this, and ruffled Eva’s hair once more. “C’mon kiddo, let’s get back to the Agency and get some sleep,” he gave her a gentle nudge towards the door. Nodding Eva hurried toward the door, opening it and quickly checking to make sure the coat was clear. A few Agency members were milling about taking care of the aftermath. A few spoke words on congratulations to the pair as they headed towards the car that would take them home.
Settled into the back of the car, Vitorio at her side, Eva silently still debated whether or not what she had done tonight was worth celebration. Ultimately as long as she made her fratello happy she too could be happy. With a soft sigh she sunk back into the seat and allowed herself to doze off.
