I went with sad on this one. I have this Polaroid of my dad on my fridge. He’s smiling in the picture and has that messy, happy, patient look to him. It, being a Polaroid, makes the metaphor of a fragile and an impermanent life. So I should be able to use that photo. But I can’t. Because it makes me happy, it’s still a happy photo.
So I’m going with this one of Jim Henson. It makes me ache a little every time I look at it. It has a nice bittersweet feel to it, and I would love to go on and on about how it’s Kermit’s expression or the green of summer or the way Jim Henson’s face it turned just enough to be private. But I think it’s just good old fashioned nostalgia.
And to mangle a quote from Don Draper Nostalgia - it's delicate, but potent. in Greek, "nostalgia" literally means "the pain from an old wound." It's a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone, it takes us to a place where we ache to go again, to a place where we know are loved.
