Survive || Criminal Minds || Hotch/Reid zeldaophelia January 15 2010, 00:43:25 UTC
It was supposed to be simple: drive with the local deputy out to talk with a person of interest (they weren't quite ready to call him an unsub). Ask a few questions, return to the sheriff's office with the answer.

Simple never worked the way you planned, even with a brain as large as Reid's.

He climbed out of the wreckage of the Surburban with Hotch's help, feeling remorselessly glad that the deputy had thrown his weight around at the office, insisting on being the one to drive. Hotch picked his battles and that was one he'd relinquished, and it had saved both their lives. The deputy, on the other hand, had been a victim of however had shot at them, riddling the driver's side of the SUV with bullets.

They'd mourn the loss of a fellow officer later, right now survival was first and foremost on their minds. The shooter, possibly the person they'd interviewed, was still out there and neither were in the best of condition. Hotch's left arm hung uselessly at his side, dislocated from the impact of their crash. Reid's head ached, having been hit hard as the SUV rolled, and he was nearly positive - only nearly since it was a self-diagnosis in a time of stress - that he had a concussion. As well as a twisted ankle.

Any thoughts of first aid were banished, however, by the sound of a revving engine up on the road. Hotch gestured to the treeline with his good hand, even as they started moving as quickly as their injuries allowed, "That'll provide us some cover."

Reid nodded gingerly, "Do you think it was Matthews?"

"I don't know," Hotch said, helping him across the rough terrain, his arm tucked around Reid's waist for support.

"My cell didn't make it, did yours?"

Hotch shook his head, glancing back over his shoulder at the wreck of the SUV. "No. But they'll come looking for us."

"We just have to stay ahead of him."
