So, stereotype count so far is, I think... 9. Possibly more. That is my major problem with this - all the bleeding stereotypes. There is pretty much no characterisation beyond them and it bugs me. I can't stand them.
Why did I not see the My Immortal comparisons - I think there's even, *checks*... Yep. Count Chocula. XD
Oh dear lord! XD That makes me a happy puppy now! Is it much further ahead? XD
I doubt it, unfortunately. I was poking around their website, it looks like PC wrote the first draft and sent it off for Kristen to make "modern". That would explain the narration shifts. A LOT.
I'm not even going to go into "powerful women", except to observe that this tells us what priority the Case ladies' vampyres have in life.
Second, am I expected to like Zoey? It would be one thing if she were deliberately being portrayed as having serious issues, but is her current behavior supposed to be considered in a positive light?
Third, I may be too long out of the teen scene, but I don't recall even the most arrogant of my classmates being like Aphrodite here.
Fourth, can the Case ladies get the chesticular region out of their heads long enough to talk about anything else? There are enough fake things in the world that we don't need to reference Ms. Anderson's...erm...assets. "About as real as press-on nails"? "A smile as genuine as a newscaster's"? "All the honesty of a sales clerk pushing an orange plaid sport coat"? This isn't hard.
"Second, am I expected to like Zoey? It would be one thing if she were deliberately being portrayed as having serious issues, but is her current behavior supposed to be considered in a positive light?"
I have yet to see anyone give any indication that they think she's a bitch. All everyone does is go on about how great she is.
"Fourth, can the Case ladies get the chesticular region out of their heads long enough to talk about anything else?"
I am REALLY hoping that they don't think that teenage girls think about Pamela's...implants. I know that I could go my entire life without thinking about them, and be no worse off for it.
"The sign is that of Nyx’s silver labyrinth, which you’ll be disappointed to note does not have David Bowie in it."
If this series had Jareth the freaking Goblin King, then I wouldn't care how shallow, annoying, or ridiculous it got. It would be my new favorite series ever.
What the hell is "antique yellow"? If you're trying to co-relate "old" and "yellow", it's only going to have negative connotations.
Also, I'm having a lot of trouble with this. This stream-of-consciousness narration with the asides and the rapid-fire obnoxious judgements CAN work (I mean, who isn't obnoxious and insta-judgmental as a teen?), but the fact that the Casts are not subtly indicating that this is a bad attitude, and actually using it as a platform to air their own opinions... yeah. Doesn't make for great reading.
It really reminds me of a short story I read, where a girl who talks much like Airhead-Zoey does meets a vampire in a mall. She doesn't know he's a vampire at first, but she thinks he's hot and he takes her out and is secretly biting all of the store owners so she can get stuff on sale. She finds none of it suspicious, until he bites a woman right in front of her.
Difference is, as you said, she was clearly meant to be stereotypical. I really doubt that Zoey is meant to be that.

I now have a theory that what the authors are doing is playing a huge joke on us all. It's not likely, but it amuses me.
