Based on this chapter, I know one thing--Fitzpatrick has never been high on painkillers in her LIFE.
Also, Nora seems to have lost her brain somewhere. What happened to her being suspicious of Patch? Are we supposed to believe that Patch is messing with her mind and memories to get what he wants? Because that's totally what I'm thinking.
/Probably goes without saying that Nora continues to traipse around, stumbling into unsafe places, even though her mother is clearly worried about her and still recovering from the death of her father
( ... )
"True, but her mother isn't much better, spending long hours away from home, days on end, all for her job and for the house they have, even though *Nora* is still ostensibly recovering from the death of her father. Nora is irresponsible and thoughtless to be sure, but her mother is just as irresponsible, leaving her daughter all alone at home with a housekeeper who's not always there."
They do handwave that later. The excuse is that Nora's mom *wants* to take a job in town, but the house is the last thing they have that reminds them of Nora's father, and it costs too much for them to keep it if Nora's mother worked in town. Still, it's a pretty flimsy excuse to make sure Nora doesn't have to deal with parents. >_< And it's mighty hard to justify them having no security system or anything

This eye color thing is something that comes up in a lot of books. What are "black" eyes? I mean, they might seem that way because of lighting, usually to coincide with a darker mood to fit with cliches, but I've never seen anyone with what I would call black eyes. They might just mean dark brown, but to make the distinction against charcoal is just silly.
It's been years since this post, but, anyway, I do/did know someone with black eyes. It was in elementary school, so we were childish enough to try different lightings and everything and stared into each other's eyes just because (mine are a boring brown, but at least I have this slightly darker ring around them. Not everyone does, we "discovered") and her's were DEFINITELY black. No visible distinction between the pupil and the iris whatsoever. She was filipino, jfyi.
