Spoilers: The entire Death Gate Cycle book series and all aired Supernatural are fair game, though since this is set in the Death Gate world, it's heavier on that.
Summary: Patryn Hunters and brothers Sam and Dean were separated when Sam left the Labyrinth to join Lord Xar in the Nexus and Dean chose to remain with their father, fighting the monsters of the Labyrinth. After Xar's defeat and the closing of the Death Gate, the evil dragon-snakes need another way out. Sam's unique bloodline gives him the potential power to open a new way out of the Sartan's prison world, and they hope to use his anger to manipulate him to their cause. The forces of good hope to use his brother to help stop them, but Dean doesn't feel much like cooperating...

Thanks also to aragorn for the lovely art accompanying this fic and for putting up with my woefully vague descriptions and the terrible dearth of source imagery for The Death Gate Cycle! Last, but certainly not least, thanks to Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, and Eric Kripke for creating characters and worlds I love deeply.
The Prologue occurs several years before Chapter 1.
Also, there are a few lines of dialogue that are lifted more or less verbatim from Supernatural. They don't belong to me, but to be fair, even had I not seen the episode from which they come, they would have been essentially the same.
Also also, I think you can read the story without very much background knowledge, but if you want it, I have included a brief primer about The Death Gate Cycle. The music selections for each chapter make up sort of an unofficial soundtrack to the story.
