Summary: Kyuhyun sees Ryeowook differently than Ryeowook sees him, and when he finds the chance to express his feelings, things take a turn for the worst. Exactly what will it take for Ryeowook to realize that his one true love is hidden where his heart resides; amongst the stars?
Kyuhyun gazed in awe as the millions of tiny winking lights danced and flickered above him. The cool evening had chased away the heavy clouds; allowing that endless pattern to light up the night sky. The breeze calmed Kyuhyun's nerves and the soft grass beneath his slack form massaged his back slowly and soothingly. He reached lazily with a gentle hand and stretched it towards the stars miles above. Being completely alone with nothing but the sky and the grass to keep him company made him treasure moments like this. It gave him time to think things over and sort his life out. He felt the tranquility ripple over his body as he temporarily left himsel f behind. He was completely at peace.
“I love you, Ryeowook.”
Ryeowook turned towards the tall, handsome man to his left and smiled politely. “I'm sorry, could you repeat that?” he said softly to his dearest friend and constant partner in crime. He wasn't sure he had heard the other correctly over the unchanging chaos of the city bus.
Kyuhyun stared him down with those dark, seductively black eyes of his. Ryeowook felt his knees buckle beneath him and a strong arm slithered around his waist. “I said I love you, Ryeowook,” the young man repeated.
Ryeowook was sure he had heard correctly this time, and a sudden overpowering feeling of fright overcame him. His mind began to reel and his stomach cartwheeled into his throat. He opened his small mouth and let out a burst of laughter, which sounded more like a raspy choke. What the hell was Kyuhyun talking about? Was this some kind of sick, messed up joke at his own expense?
Kyuhyun blinked back tears as he saw the reaction of his best friend. His hand was pushed away and he stared helplessly as Ryeowook backed away slowly and leaped off the unmoving bus and onto the sidewalk; running into the busy crowds.
Kyuhyun made a move to follow, but stopped himself because he knew it would only worsen the situation. “Fuck,” he whispered while struggling to keep the tears at bay. “Why the hell did I say that?” This had been a chance of a lifetime, and he had screwed it up permanently.
He gazed upwards at the blanket of lights, waiting for them to speak to his heart in the same way they had the previous night. Nothing. The stars were telling him nothing.
“WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?” he shouted to the heavens, as if expecting a miracle. The stars remained the same; twinkling and laughing, almost as if they enjoyed his torment. “Do you think this is funny?” he whimpered. He clenched a handful of grass in his fist and ripped it from the ground, ignoring the strained screams the tiny stalks made as they were torn from their life support. He threw the green clump at the sky, hoping to hit one of those stars. The grass flew a few meters upwards before floating innocently back down to earth.
Was this it? Was this to be the end of a friendship he cherished more than anything else? Had he ruined his relationship with the one person he loved beyond any other soul?
Kyuhyun cried out his heartache; letting the tears pull free. “I HATE YOU!” he shouted at the laughing sky. “I HATE YOU!”
He drew in a breath and screamed out his anguish as the clouds rolled in and obliterated the stars.
Across town, Ryeowook pulled out his cell phone and stared at it; contemplating whether he should phone Kyuhyun. He had received over twenty messages from the other young man, expressing his apologies. He hadn't bothered to read all of them, but was now curious. He flipped open the phone and scrolled through each message one by one.
The texts were more or less the same. “I'm sorry”, “Will you forgive me?”, “Are we still friends?”. Sweet, apologetic little messages like that continued for twenty-four separate texts, though, as Ryeowook opened the twenty-fifth and final message, his heart crunched in his chest.
“Ryeowook, I am so terribly sorry for saying the things I said today. I will completely understand if you don't forgive me, and that's okay. I will learn to get over it. I just want to tell you something that has been on my mind for quite some time now.
“Remember when we were younger, and we used to gaze up at the stars on Summer nights? Well, ever since last week I have begun to do that again. I lay in that same field and look up at the stars. It's quite peaceful, and I find myself able to think about things.
“So as I was gazing up at those stars a few nights ago I recalled something you said to me every night we used to lay in that field. You had said “Those stars look so small from down here, but they are actually as big as our own Sun.” Then you turned towards me with a serene smile on your face and said softly, “Kyu, have I ever told you how your eyes are like those stars? Well, they are. They're big, mysterious, and twinkle when you're happy. I want you to be happy all the time.”
I just wanted to tell you that I am happy, Ryeowook. You've made me the happiest person in this entire universe. So thank you, and I'm sorry that I may have ruined our friendship.”
Ryeowook's south hung open in astonishment as he read and reread the message. He was in shock. He quickly regained his senses, dropped the phone and raced for the door, not bothering with a coat. He ran for a bus and hopped on before the doors closed. “Whoa, what's got you in such a hurry?” the bus driver said with raised eyebrows. Ryeowook was doubled over from sprinting from his apartment to the bus stop.
Ryeowook leaned against a metal bar as he caught his breath. “I'm going to go stargazing,” he said with a smile.
Author's Note: I know that this is kind of a cliffhanger of sorts, but I think it might be best this way. Enjoy and please comment!
