What I'm Reading

I'm in the middle of The Rubber Band, a Nero Wolfe mystery by Rex Stout - it's good! Fun murder mystery, even more fun if you like the detectives. (Archie is such a charm to read. Reminds me of reading PG Wodehouse's novels just to see Bertie Wooster narrate.)

I'm also in the middle of The Russians by Hedrick Smith - fascinating look at all aspects of Russian life in the 60s/70s. Written by a reporter who lived there for a while, and it's just. Fascinating. (Also, apparently the copy I'm reading came from my grandma, so it's been neat to let her know I'm reading it.)

And finally I'm reading Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts books - I'm in the early stages of the third book, Necropolis, and it's. It's so grimdark. I love it. I'm prepared for everyone to die, and with that mindset firmly in place, I love it. Great military-type novels in a sci-fi grimdark universe. (Warhammer 40k, to be precise, but you barely need to know anything other than the forces of Chaos = bad.) I have to hand it to Abnett, though - I've never seen a plot wrapped up so quickly. The second book, Ghostmaker - literally five pages and he wrapped up the plot, resolved the loose ends, and in the process didn't confuse or irritate me. It was a good ending. Just. Five pages. I'm still shocked at that. (I'm reading these books in omnibus format, btw)
