Year End Writing Meme + Status Report

Dec 31, 2011 08:25

It's the last post of the year, or penultimate post if I wind up thinking of something else to post later today, so I figured I ought to sum up the year.

IRL-wise, I am doing well in some areas and not so well in other areas - getting better at understanding myself and my quirks, and learning how to keep balance in my life...I've started journaling on a fairly regular basis again, and that helps a lot. I should try to appreciate what I have more, though - this could be the happiest year of my life and I just don't realize it right now. In any case, it's been a good year and I hope next year keeps getting better.

Online-wise, I think it's been good. Feels more quiet, but then again I might be forgetting and/or blending this year with last year... I feel like with the withdrawing from the SPN fandom I am somewhat paring down my circle of friends to those who will stick around even if I'm off engaged in some video game fandom that only two other people period know of. *cough* Also, importantly, RP has been going quite well! Helps me get plenty of ideas and characters working, and I just feel good all around in that corner of my life.

Writing-wise, it's not quite as successful as last year - January and most of the early months weren't fantastic with what I was writing...but then memories of the Human AU and other things (Yuletide \o/) come to mind and I think...just like last year, it had its ups and downs. I'm still ambiguous on my NaNo, as it didn't entirely do what I wanted it to do, but I did enjoy the month (and succeed at it, so) in any case, I am looking forward to next year's NaNo and other longfic challenges.

Specifically, the Gabriel bigbang I need to begin work on, my Tarot prompt table, and NaNo. And I think for next year I should attempt to write something less experimental and with less grand plans - grand plans yes, but ones that aren't as epically huge, as I always wind up falling short and getting disappointed that I couldn't cover everything plot-wise in 50k words. (Yes I know I could write another 50k after the event, but I'm not very good at making myself write daily without a big carrot or big stick, so I try to confine NaNo to, well, NaNo.)

A few New Year's resolutions:

1. Do my best not to offer fic without stopping and thinking about what else I already owe. I want to clear off my writing plate so I have time to work on personal projects...and time to work on c_f fills and so on.

2. Continue keeping a journal. It's helping.

3. Try to branch out in what I post here. My thoughts aren't entirely writing or video game focused, and it might be interesting to post about what I've been reading or doing or whatever. (I am allowed to flock posts that might be too personal, reminder to self.)

There are other things I need to be doing, but those are more general and everpresent, so fingers crossed that I can keep these.

Also! Here is a meme for more writing introspection:

Total number of completed stories:
129, more or less. Counting the Human AU and chaptered fics as one story, too. I think I wrote about what I was expecting, but then again it could be more, so...either way, it's a good haul!

Total word count:
I'd say at least 100k. I'm not going to do an exact count this year, but it was a sizable number, between NaNo, Human AU and a certain WIP and other fics.

Overall Thoughts

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
As I said earlier, I think it was about what I was expecting, and either way it's a good haul.

What's your own favorite story of the year?
My favorite? Hoo boy, this is more about my favorites.

For the language, and character study: Bird-Cage.

For the writing and because I adore writing the vessels: nameless c_f fill.

For the smut and Raphael (I rather like the Gabriel/Raphael dynamic!): Don't Let It Fool You. Also, in the same vein, Terrible Positions (which has Kali, too!)

For sheer adorableness: unnamed fluff.

For the coolness of the idea that I need to return and explore someday: two c_f fills.

For nostalgia, for evil, and for Jack <3 - c_f fic wherein Jeeves teaches Jack a few things.

For the four archangels in one room dealing with issues: Relocation; Adjustments.

For more nostalgia, because writing Tony and Control is like coming home: Nearly A Month.

And that's...a lot. I wrote a lot this year, and I liked quite a bit of it.

Did you take any writing risks this year?
Yes. I wrote completely original fic for NaNo, I started cyborgfic, which didn't really work, and I even pulled off the Human AU. Among other things.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Just finish what's on my plate, and do my absolute best to see that my grandplan for my tarot table is as perfect as it can be, as it will be my resolution to something that's been haunting me for a long time.

Best & Worst Of

My best story of this year:
Hahahahaha no. See above for favorites, and *handwave* that's about it.

My most popular story of this year:
I'd say the Human AU, but there's no telling, really.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
All of it. Why aren't you all decrying me as the best writer to have ever lived and - :PPPP

Seriously though, I'd say my NaNo, but then again. Eh, it depends.

Most fun story to write:
My NaNo, as it ate my brain and didn't let me leave until the month was done. But really - most of my fic is fun to write.

Story with the single sexiest moment:
I'm going to say Terrible Positions (Raphael/Gabriel/Kali) but honestly? I wrote a lot of smut this year. A lot.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
...Depends. Probably the Jack + Jeeves one, but...

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
The Human AU, IMHO. Learning about the archangels was good, and one of the big benefits to writing it.

Hardest story to write:
This ranges, but I'll go with my recent T/C fic, as that took far longer than it should have. >.<

Biggest Disappointment:
Cyborgfic and spacebang didn't work out. :<

Biggest Surprise:
Not just that I could conceive of the idea of my NaNo, but that I pulled it off - it wasn't what I originally envisioned, but...just. Yes. :D

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
Mm...I don't know. Maybe my NaNo. Maybe my angelbang, when it gets posted.

Short version:
Holy carp I wrote a lot of smut this year. A lot, and that's saying something.

Also, being ambitious is good, but I need to dial it back a tad this year. Or be ambitious in different ways.
