This is me being a supergeek about not one but TWO things. XD;; This is also for
jabber_moose, as she agrees that it's Jack in there.
Okay, context! This is an excerpt from the game SMT:SJ, and was typed up by me for my own amusement. See: there's a character named Jack in the game. See: he is written to sound almost exactly like Jack from A Bit of Fry and Laurie. I would swear that they stole Stephen Fry to write him, and if he were voice-acted would have a British accent. Needless to say, Jack's a villain. Despite the name, he's more Jack Dalliard than he is Captain Jack Harkness, so strike Harkness from your mind.
A little context/dictionary for SMT: You, the main character, and your coworkers are lost in a weird space-time place called the Schwarzwelt. Demons are everywhere and ready to attack you, but you can negotiate with some of them and have them fight with you.
The crew you're part of picks up a signal from another ship - one that we don't know about. We came in with three ships and two of them are destroyed now, leaving only the Red Sprite functional and working. You thought you were the only humans in this place...in any case. You're sent to investigate this ship, with the help of Jimenez.
Demonica = basically a space-suit only awesomer.
Lightning = Jack's spaceship. Basically.
Red Sprite = Main character's spaceship, basically.
Jimenez = one of the main characters, has a friend demon named Bugaboo.
Ryan = works for Jack. Mercenary.
Warning for spoilers for SMT:SJ. Don't read this if you're planning to play the game!
It starts here.
> You were taken to a man wearing a black Demonica...
Man: Welcome to the Lightning. For us to meet in this hellish place, so far from home...Perhaps we knew each other in a past life.
Jimenez: ... You the boss here?
Man: You're certainly blunt for a man sent to negotiate...though my men are the same way. It's all right.
Yes, I am the leader of our small band known as Jack's Squad. My name, as you perhaps have guessed, is Captain Jack.
Jimenez: Pleasure meetin' you, Jack. I, uh...thanks for inviting us in. I'm Jimenez, and this here's [main character name]. We came on behalf of the investigative team.
Bugaboo: ...Boo! Buga, boo! Jimenez!
Jimenez: No one asked you, Bugaboo! You don't need to introduce yourself! Just stay quiet!
Excuse the li'l guy. He's a demon I use in combat. He won't hurt you, and he's housebroken too. Don't worry.
Captain Jack: To fight demons...you use demons. Very well, then. I apologize for calling you here in the midst of a difficult mission for you. And when you're so close to escaping, at that...
Jimenez: ...How much do you know?
Jack: Why, I said as much before. You should assume we know as much as the Joint Project you stay in contact with does. Your crew being stranded, using demons to fight demons, your progress in the Schwarzwelt...
You won't take offense if we pluck what information there is to be had from the ether, I hope?
Jimenez: ...... Well... least it saves us time explaining it all.
Jack: It's thanks to your information that we've been able to infiltrate the Schwarzwelt without incident. So on that point, you have my sincerest gratitude.
But as to whether we form a united front...Well, you may as well know that is what you are here to discuss.
Jimenez: Okay. While we're following your lead, why don't you tell us what you want?
Jack: First, we must know where we stand vis-a-vis one another. So you've come to this hellish place on a mission to save mankind! Wonderful! Bravo! Just the sort of selflessness that warrants praise!
We, though...differ somewhat. I regret to say we were simply dispatched by our patrons. You might call us a caravan traversing the black desert known as the Schwarzwelt.
Our role here is as... businessmen, of sorts. Our priorities: profit and wealth. So long as we retrieve items that prove profitable to our patrons, we may do as we wish.
You're here to save mankind, whereas we're here with an eye toward development. Our footing is, shall we say, somewhat inequal. However...
Our objectives are not mutually exclusive. Coexistence is very much possible, I should think. Acknowledging one another's goals and basing our interactions on a mutual nonaggression pact...
I'd like us to be good neighbors, the sort who help each other in times of need. What say you?
Ah, but of course... You regularly make contracts with demons. An agreement with a human should be child's play for you.
Can we establish cordial relations?
> Humans should help each other. (Neutral choice)
Jack: Very good to see a negotiation with such discernment. I trust our talks will go smoothly.
> I'd sooner trust the demons. (Chaos choice)
Unknown answer, as I didn't feel like rebooting the game AGAIN to get it. >.>;;
> I don't trust anyone easily. (Law choice)
Jack: That's certainly one way of living one's life. If one never lets down one's guard, one can never lose. I do hope we can work together, though. Fellow humans are a rare thing in this world...
Jimenez: Well, I'd rather not rile the only other humans we've met so far...
----------------
I cut it there as it went into less interesting negotiations. Jack basically wants us to go get them three plot items in exchange for friendly relations - i.e. we leave them alone, and they leave us alone.
Set some time later, when we return to Jack with the items.
----------------
Jack: Hello, [Character's Last Name]. I see you've escaped death at the hands of the demons for another day. Now then, what brings you here?
Did you bring the items we asked?
> No
Jack: Alas, I have nothing to say to you for now. Spare time is a rare commodity here, one I doubt either of us possesses. Show them out, won't you?
Jack's Squad: Sir, yes sir! C'mon, I'll show you guys out. And don't come back unless you've got the stuff! I got enough to do around here without you jokers! Got it!?
> Yes
Jack: Ahhh, splendid! If you'll just allow me to confirm that...
......
Everything seems to be in order. One Hydro Apple, one Ice-10, and one X Metal. And these are for us to keep, yes? Ahh, very kind of you.
Get these to the lab!
Jack's Squad: Sir, yes sir! I'll take those. Hand 'em over.
> You handed Jack's Squad the [items blah blah]
Jack's Squad: You did well... You'll go far in life.
Jack: If memory serves, there was one other component to the trade, yes? Your superior Forma Search that located these formas. I'll take that now as well. Transmit it to my Demonica, won't you?
> You opened a link to Jack's Demonica and uploaded the Forma Search B program.
Jack: And you're now...paid in full. Excellent. We have what we asked for, so it's time we upheld our end. I've ordered my men to coordinate with yours in the search for the Vanishing Point. What was it you called the place? Sector Eridanus...? I'll notify my men there. The details will be explained on-site.
Best of luck, gentlemen.
----------------
Set some time later, after fighting Ouroboros and discovering that we can't kill it.
----------------
Jack: Hello, [main character's last name]. Pardon me if I'm intruding on anything. You fought masterfully, but it seems your opponent had the upper hand. My sympathies. I expected the monsters of this world would make our egress difficult. We must be on guard.
Now then, a word of warning about Ouroboros. We've confirmed on our end a number of entities sending energy to the Vanishing Point. Perhaps you should try using the Main App we presented you with.
Very sorry that I can't be of more assistance, but...well, it seems worth a try, no?
Zelenin: ...I can confirm what Jack said, [main character's last name]. There is in fact energy flowing into the Vanishing Point from various points around Eridanus. It's most likely this very energy that's ressurecting Ouroboros.
Jimenez: So...as long as those things keep feeding her energy, she's unstoppable...
Arthur: Calling all crew... This energy beam information will likely be useful in overcoming our present situation. Find the sources of this energy and remove them.
Jimenez: Find the sources...does he want us to search Eridanus all over again!? Doesn't he have any idea how huge this place is!? Tch...I'm sure he knows, and just as sure he doesn't care. Let's split up, it'll go faster. I'll see you later, [main character's first name]. We're done here.
Zelenin: [Main character's last name], Jimenez, wait! The monitor team has already identified some anomalous areas. I'll send the data if you'd like to investigate them. Better than stumbling around blindly, yes?
[map begins showing hotspots]
Zelenin: The energy sources appear to be spread out around this floor.
Jimenez: Okay. I'll go knock out a few of 'em. See ya, [main character's first name].
----------------
And cut after that. We defeat Ouroboros, and don't have any significant run-ins with Jack for quite some time - practically three bosses later we run into a problem.
It seems Jack's set up a little base area and is in general refusing to tell us what he's doing there. This is hugely suspicious, and Jimenez volunteers to stay behind near the base and keep an eye on him.
We get back to our mission, and then we receive news that Jimenez is missing, so we head back to Jack's HQ, and we get a message from him.
[assume that everyone except Jack and Ryan are part of our crew and good guys]
----------------
Jack: I'm rather disappointed that I find myself forced to send you this warning, Red Sprite. I thought we had an understanding not to interfere with one another. But you've gone back on your word. You've infringed on the agreement; violated our contract. Our good neighbor policy is at an end. Any friendly relations we had are null and void.
Tyler: Hey, wait! We don't even know what happened! What did you do with Jimenez!?
Jack: Playing dumb, eh? If you insist... I'll spell it out for you. Your crewman, Jimenez... He entered our base without our permission and sabotaged our experiment labs. It's difficult to classify this undermining of our operations as anything other than a hostile act.
Tyler: Jimenez? Sabotage!? He was acting on his own!
Jack: Whatever his motives, it was unquestionably sabotage. He snuck into the lab and let loose our... experimental materials. We were quick to regain control of the situations, so there were no unrecoverable losses... But if we had noticed it only minutes later, the damage would have been severe.
Ryan (One of Jack's Henchmen): That clown tried to set free every single demon we'd worked so hard to capture! He was even using his own demons to help! If they'd started to riot, who can say what might've happened!?
Zelenin: Your "experimental materials" were... demons!? You were using demons in experiments!? What did you hope to accomplish!?
Jack: Please refrain from inquiring into our affairs. We're simply doing our utmost to effect our business plan. There's certainly no reason you should interfere.
Ryan: That dumbass Jimenez... He tried to save the experimental materials and ended up as one himself! He put all our lives in danger, and believe you me, he's gonna pay.
Kato: You're going to use Jimenez in an experiment!? You can't be serious! He's a human! You can't experiment on humans!
Jack: We thought it fitting to leave his fate to the demon research team. I have no intention of forgiving him for what he's done. Our research team is top-hole. I'm sure he'll be put to good use.
Mackie: Stop it! Give us Jimenez back! What do you want from us!?
Jack: Nothing, save for thorough severance of relations. I believe you've underestimated us. Did you think the Schwarzwelt was safe enough that you could enter half prepared? It isn't. In the blink of an eye here, 1 or 2... of 10 or 20... lives can be lost. Remember that, and say goodbye to your friend.
Muccino: The Lightning signed off! I can't raise them again...!
----------------
This leads to our invasion of Jack's HQ. We discover they've been torturing and experimenting on demons...and Jimenez. Jimenez sacrificed his humanity to save Bugaboo by fusing with him into a new entity. I wish I could emphasize how good this scene was, but as it wasn't directly Jack-related I didn't type it up. In any case, we make sure he's okay, then head to corner Jack for a final confrontation.
----------------
Jack: You've caused us quite a bit of bother. It's clear this is too far gone to settle with talk. Our base is devastated, we've sustained losses in equipment and manpower... And on top of it all, our weapon development program has been thoroughly destroyed. If our patrons learn how badly our plans were disrupted, I should think they'd be rather cross. To back down here would blacken my squad's name as a business concern. You will compensate us for this. Oh yes. With everything you have...
Jimenez: That's my line, Captain Jack Shit! The grudge engraved on my body...! The grudge of the demons you screwed with...! That's the only payback you're getting!
Jack: You've become a seething mass of uncontrolled emotion...Frightful. It seems we still have a few kinks to work out in our fusion process. To leave this defective product alive could endanger our reputation. I shall dispose of you!
> Jack summoned demons!
Jack: These are my finest custom demons... They'll suck the marrow from your bones!
> Jack's demons attacked Jimenez!
Jimenez: Rrrrraaaaaagh! Let 'em try!
> Jimenez began fighting the demons!
Jack: ...[main character's first name], yes? You have crimes to atone for as well. There's the matter of revenge for my men you slaughtered, of course... But in the end, a breakdown of business is war. Nations or corporations, there is little difference. A vast array of armaments becomes a grand business asset. There's no liability in having one.
With this in my possession... I can crush what needs to be crushed and take what needs to be taken.
> Jack set his Demonica to battle mode.
Jack: How much power do I have, you wonder? A quick demonstration is in order!
----------------
[One boss fight later]
----------------
Jack: N... No... My demons... I've... lost...!?
Jimenez: I'm sure your demons would rather die than protect scum like you...
Jack: Can't we... come to terms... isn't there... something I can do...?
Jimenez: ...You're learning, Jack. This isn't Earth. There's no laws to charge you with...
Jack: Wh... What are you...?
Jimenez: But y'see, Jack, that's the thing... This isn't Earth. And there's no laws holding me back either. It's over for you!
> Jimenez raised his hand...!
> Stop Jimenez (Law)
[I didn't bother, as I wasn't rebooting my game to fight him AGAIN]
> Watch (Neutral)
Jack: Arrrrrrrrrrrgh!
[The screen goes red]
> Jimenez's arm tore through Jack's chest!
Jimenez: Awww... Think I overdid it, [main character's first name]? Nah...There was no stopping it. The moment I took this form... ...Hee... Hee hee hee!
Ryan: C...C-C...Captain! Th-The Captain's dead! Wh...What's going to happen to us..!?
Jimenez: Well... With your commander dead... You'll need a new commander. Would that be you...? Don't worry. Until there's no one to replace your commander... I'll keep sending you to Hell! Hee hee! Hee...!
Ryan: What...!? Wait, wait...! I'm not like the Captain... I'm more flexible...I'll help you! Y-Yeah! That's right! If you kill me...you'll lose all the Lightning's technology! I know you guys are looking for Exotic Matter, right!? Well, I'll help you! I-I mean...if you'll let me...! P-Please, spare me...!
Jimenez: What a sad sack... There's not a single thing you believe in, huh? Why don't you try learning from the demons? So long, Captain Ryan...!
Voice: Stop right there, Jimenez!
Jimenez: Huh...!? What!?
Zelenin: They don't have the will to fight us anymore. There's no point in prolonging this. That's just slaughter for its own sake.
Jimenez: ...That an order?
Zelenin: ...I'm just doing what's right as a member of the investigative team. What we should do now is disarm Jack's squad and confiscate any usable equipment.
Ryan: I'll serve under you... It would be an honor! Just spare my life...
Zelenin: We won't kill you. But you must cooperate with our investigation.
Jimenez: ...Getting in my way... Couldn't help but see you as an enemy for a second there, Zelenin.
Strike Team Member: Good work, [main character's name]! Not only did you rescue Jimenez, you took control of Jack's squad! You go get some rest. We can take it from here. ...Jimenez! Report to sickbay and get yourself examined!
Jimenez: I dunno what for. I feel perfectly fine, man. But...if you say so... I wanted to get some more exercise in, though...Dammit!
Zelenin: ...... [main character's first name]. You did well on the mission. Let's wait for Arthur's orders on how to proceed from here...
----------------
And that's the last of Jack. It's an interesting string of events and a good story, imho, but most importantly to me? That was Jack.
Go and watch Jack's first scene in A Bit of Fry and Laurie with Neddy. The one where he tells Neddy to put a bomb in a restaurant.
Reread his dialogue here, and see what I mean? It's Jack! It's like finding AU Boffle fic! \o/
