The unfolding disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant has me spending all my spare time and then some till the wee hours reading about reactor design and safety systems and makes me want to go into nuclear engineering. Am I weird

I wish others would sit down and study this the way you have. I got shouted down by a bunch of fear-mongers who insisted that it would be another Chernobyl and also kill people in California through radiation poisoning, as well as much of the United States. They weren't against nuclear power. They were just so ill-informed on what nuclear power is they automatically imagined large nuclear mushroom clouds and radiation seeping across the ground like water. Too many don't understand and make up their worst nightmare to fill in the gap, then spread that as truth.
