I just realized with having driven 4+ hours today I could have made it to Boston or almost to D.C. What a waste of driving time just to end back in Somerville!
Typically D.C. takes about 5 hrs from where I use to live in Jersey. So, yeah, with the amount of driving I did today around NJ/NY I could have basically made it there with just a little more driving time.
I was using those an example of two cities or distances worthwhile of that length of drive. I should try to make an effort to get down there on one of my next trips.... I think it would be fun. :)
I would imagine various conservative family value organizations would have problems with guys dressed in drag racing wheelchairs. ;)
On a serious note, no, wheelchair racing itself is definitely not objectionable. Major network and cable channels, for example ESPN, frequently cover the wheelchair division in the major road races (10K, marathons, etc). Usually the broadcaster that has the Olympics will also provide coverage to the Paralympics, although in a completely stripped down, non-significant manner deserving of Special Olympics versus "real" athletic coverage. :(
It's not like it's the special olympics...
My objection to the Special Olympics is that by going after its mission above all else it has encouraged a condescending view of the games and participants as witnessed by both our comments.
Being paid to hug... I'd quit my job too! I bet you were good at giving hugs. :)
Hmmm... I just noticed on the IPC website that I linked to in my other comment that they are looking at integrating intellectually disabled athletes into their events. That would in essence provide those athletes that would compete in Special Olympics an alternative in which they can compete at an elite level.
