We ate our breakfast at the hotel, since we got vouchers. I drank coffee, black. At some point I guess I started not minding coffee.
We took a quick walk down by the beach while we waited for the post office to open so I could mail my postcards. There were some really nice banyan trees. It's really hard to do justice to them in a photo.
Huge tree.
Then off to the post office. Even 5 minutes after it had opened, there was already a line, but it went pretty quick.
We then drove up to 'Akaka Falls State Park, to see the waterfalls. It was also interesting to see everywhere that sugar cane used to grow.
The park just had a short loop trail, but there were interesting things to see.
Big bamboo plants (monocots).
A different waterfall.
A really cute little lizard.
A somewhat less cute gigantic slug.
Gorgeous 'Akaka Falls.
The most interesting thing about 'Akaka Falls itself is that there are gobies and shrimp that manage to climb up the falls to reproduce, like the
'O'opu. They have a suction cup on their bellies to allow them to do this. Nature is really weird.
After that we headed to the airport so I could catch my flight. My dad got to hang around for another 6 hours, and boasted about all the sea turtles he saw after I left, but I wasn't around for that.
My first flight was from Hawai'i to San Francisco, then a layover for a couple hours during which I wandered around sleeplessly and aimlessly, and then on to Chicago (I managed to doze off for maybe an hour of that flight at the very end), and another boring layover, although a surprising number of things in an airport are open at 6am, and then back to Madison, where I promptly went to take a nap. And then skipped Zumba that afternoon.
And that was that.
