Hawai'i Work Trip Day 2 (Sunday)

Mar 04, 2018 23:44

We woke up really early, of course.  The time difference was at that point 4 hours.  So we ate some peanut butter and bread, and then decided to go exploring.

The first obstacle was that I had the wrong hat, and it was really bright.  So we walked back to the little mall where the grocery store was.  Nothing was open, because it was like, 8 am.

So then we decided to go see some petroglyphs that were nearby.  Google Maps led us astray and onto a gated road, so we ended up sneaking across the (empty) golf course, then walking along the beach.  Tiny, jagged sand does not mix well with sandals, was what I learned.  But eventually we found the petroglyphs.  They are carved into the rocks.  At the head of the trail, there were a few, and then we walked the rest of it (maybe a mile?) and found a whole bunch, mostly people.  It was clearly really important to the people who made them.

I didn't take any photos, apparently, sorry.

After that, we went back to the mall to look for a hat.  The first few places we tried we had no luck, but eventually we tried a surfer shop and they had a perfect one! I'm going to keep it in Madison (usually I'm borrowing one when I go hiking/camping/to the farm so I don't have to remember to bring it on the bus).  So that was a win.

After all that exertion and hat-buying, we decided to get some ice cream.  I got mango-lychee (luckily, tasted mostly like lychee) and pineapple sorbet (which made my mouth itch, oops).  My dad, in a shock to anyone who has ever met him, got a smoothie instead of ice cream.  It also had "poisonous" things in it: strawberry, pineapple, mango, and blueberry.  (Actually he might not have minded the blueberry).  I had to take a photo as proof.

He drank it all!

And then we went back out wandering around again.

There were some fish ponds also nearby, which were pretty cool.  The Hawaiians would make gates that would let small fish through, but trap the big fish inside.  Then they could eat the big fish.  There were also eels, though we didn't see many (and initially misidentified some random fish as an eel, because we didn't know what eels look like exactly).  We also saw some crabs.

Other animal sightings included a feral cat, and some birds, and some bright yellow fish.  Actually, a lot of fish.

After that we went to a little historical park, though as usual we wandered around lost a bit first.  There wasn't too much in it, but there was a lava tube where probably people might have used to live.

After all that, we eventually wanted some dinner. Plus we wanted to use up some of our credit.  So we tried out the bar.  It was okay, though pricey.  I had salad and sushi (again), and my dad had a burger.  And we had some Kona Brewing Company beer.  And then it was back to trying to stay awake until 10pm.

We did not take the straightest path anywhere.

Supposedly we walked 12.8 miles / 28 flights of stairs, but the distance is probably exaggerated because I took tiny steps on the horrible jagged beach sand.  But not much exaggerated...
