I remember reading somewhere that the lines of
R K Narayan's first novel on
Malgudi was actually inspired by Mysore; a small town with large boulevards, laid-back lifestyle, strong coffee and simple people. And I looked with this opinion at Mysore. But when we reached there and got conned several times near the city centre by three-wheeler rickshaw wallahs, I felt deceived.
So to take our minds off the episode, we walked and wondered why was it that most sweet shops in Mysore were called Bombay Sweets or Bombay Tiffany's. I tried finding out why there seemed a fascination for the Bombay connection but with no success. I reasoned that maybe the first few people who tasted sweets in Bombay liked them and came back and founded sweet shops with the Bombay name and that stuck. I may be entirely wrong here.
And whilst we walked, we also saw this.
A shop owned by a family was closing down. It was a small shop and with what I saw, there was an adjoining room to it. The couple was making the most use of the space, that included the scooter as well. I liked the simplicity of the atmosphere. It took me back to the opinion I had of Mysore.
