Bait Bazi

Alhaj Hakim Raazi Adeebi Ashrafi runs a dawakhana on Sachapir Street near Shivaji Market in Poona. To modern citizens, he would be a quack, but he insists that the Ayurveda he practises can fix any disease. I believe him. What I liked about him in the time we talked was his jovial way of looking at things. He packed his Ayurvedic doses with smiles.

He also is an eminent writer of Urdu verse, and as I took his leave, he presented me with one of his latest books, Rahnuma-e Bait Bazi. Bait Bazi is a verse game played in South East Asia, especially in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Though it is not too regular in Bangladesh, Mushairas in India and Pakistan are never complete without a round of Bait Bazi.

Bait Bazi is a game where one has to start with a verse (shayari) and the next person has to recite another verse starting with the last word or letter of the previous verse and the chain has to continue in verse after verse.
