While reading
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator to Connor, it occurred to me that at least the first few chapters are very reminiscent of
Doctor Who, with Wonka as the Doctor and the titular elevator as the TARDIS. Since the Doctor had been on television for almost a decade when the book was written, I have to wonder if Dahl wasn't influenced by it.
Anyway, I tweeted this observation, and my coworker Josh responded on Facebook with "Not until there are Daleks." That led me to compose the following (by way of
an initial tossed-off reply that didn't scan to the original movie music).
Blame Josh.
OOMPA-LOOMPA DOOMPITY DOO
WE HAVE A VITAL MESSAGE FOR YOU
OOMPA-LOOMPA DOOMPITY DUSS
YOU HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO LISTEN TO US
WHAT DO YOU GET SHOWING MERCY AND LOVE -
FEELINGS WE DALEKS HAVE RISEN ABOVE?
TEARDROPS AND HEARTACHE, FOES WHO RETURN
IF YOU DON'T KILL THEM, THEY NEVER LEARN
(JUST LOOK AT THE DO-OC-TOR)
OOMPA-LOOMPA DOOMPITY DAH
FEWER EMOTIONS WILL TAKE YOU FAR
PRIDE AND ANGER, ENVY AND HATE
THAT'S ALL DALEKS NEED TO
EXTERMINATE!
Edit: Thanks to Stan Mitchell for the new title of this post, which should have been obvious. I'm reminded of an incident involving "R2-D-car". But never mind.
