I know a lot of somethings about the application of (petroleum) fuel. Some I've learned out of curiosity, others out of necessity.
Here's what I know about unleaded:
Fill your tank as often as possible. Why? Less emptiness (air) in your tank means less water vapor to make rust on the inside of your tank. Less room for air means less room for fuel to change into vapor state...we want it in liquid state. Also, taking fuel from top of tank allows funk and gunk (rusty bits, etc) to settle to the bottom. Use the bottoms of the tank and that gunk moves into fuel line and engine.
Fill tank s-l-o-w-l-y and in the morning if you have the time. Why? Allows the vapors to escape from the tank...more room for the liquid. First thing in the morning the air is cooler and fuel will be more in the liquid state than vaporous as it will when the day (and yr tank) heats up.
Never fill yr tank while the tanker truck is unloading fuel into the gas station. Why? As s/he's filling the station's tank, it's stirring up all the funk and junk which lives on the bottom portion of the tank. With time these particles will settle back down to the bottom, but the more they're stirred up the more likely they will find their way into yr tank and cause problems.
Stay away from El Cheapo fuel chains. They may have The Cheapest Gas In Town, but often not the cleanest product. Fuel should be able to flow quickly into yr tank; the slower it flows, the more clogged their hoses and lines are. That's more funk and gunk. Run away! Run away!
How to improve a car's fuel economy:
Maintain it well - oil changes, filters, tires at correct pressure
Keep it light - it takes more force to move a heavier object.
Keep it smooth - air flow can slow a car down, requiring it to work harder to maintain speed. Open windows are the biggest culprit of this; try the sunroof instead.
Keep it slow - the fuel economy above 55 mph drops WAY down. Sorry folks, that speed is going to cost you.
Manuals are the bomb. Not only is a manual transmission lighter than an automatic, it's cheaper to purchase...and allows more control over the engine...which means less wasted fuel.
Find another way to keep your cool - air conditioning, while comfy, uses more fuel to run.
