'Twas the night before the New Year and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, except for me and a mouse.
Sidrah was snuggled in her swaddler with care,
In hopes she wouldn't spit-up on the last thing to wear.
The girls were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Mulan danced in their heads;
Mommy in her comforter, and Emilia in her wrap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When under the sink there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the sofa to see what was the matter.
Away to the kitchen I flew like a flash,
Ducked under the sink and looked in the trash.
The fluorescent lights, humming and aglow,
Gave the lustre of midday to objects below;
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a brown little mouse, with two hairless ears...
That was just before midnight. I hesitate to inform you that the mouse did not live to see the new year. I slept deeply while the winds howled outside through the night. By daybreak, the skies were clearing and the sun revealed the big job ahead. Almost a foot of new snow had fallen and then blown into undulating drifts.
Beginning of the day.
Emilia feels up to the challenge.
End of the day.
