The funny things that happened during the reading of the book
The week leading up to the release was very stressful and filled with ever-changing plans. My initial plan to pick up the book in Toronto, with my sister, had to be changed late Thursday, so I pre-ordered another book at my local store (so yes, I technically bought two copies. I am sure I will find someone to sell/give it to)
Well, all day Friday, I was looking after my sick toddler, who had something wrong with his throat and had been put on anti-biotics. My husband was really late coming home from work, so my 5 year old missed out on some of the children's activities at Chapters, but we did make it to the release party alright.
When I got home at 1am, my toddler was up screaming, having only had one hour of sleep. We drove around til he fell asleep, then we went to bed, only to be woken up after less than an hour, with him screaming again. So we took him to the hospital, where he would cry for over an hour straight, then fall asleep for twenty minutes, before waking up screaming again.
(and if you believe Canadians have the perfect health care system, I would beg to differ with you)
Well, around six in the morning we finally saw a Dr., who told us he had ulceres in his mouth, and really, there was nothing they could do. After some blood work, we were released around 8:30am. So, I had been up all night, but didn't get to read ONE WORD AT ALL!
The rest of Saturday was busy, and again, I couldn't get to the book. I got up with my son early Sunday, and since he was starting to get better (or incredibly drugged up) I finally got to open the book. I was in the middle of an exciting scene, early in the book, when he came up to me and grabbed my glasses. Not wanting to start him screaming again, I let him take them, thinking I would grab them back shortly. And that's when I heard it.
SNAP. Yes, he broke my glasses.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but I did keep reading and by bedtime I had the book finished. And I think that anybody actually reading this will understand why all these challenges didn't keep me away from the story, although many members of my family think I am crazy!
