March 11

Hello!

Today is 11-M as they say here in Spain, otherwise known as the one year anniversary of the largest terrorist attack in the history of Europe, the train bombings in Madrid. Needless to say the city has been a bit strange these last few days, as if people are holding their breath. Today is an absolutely beautiful day though and I think that helps. We interrupted class today to go outside for 5 minutes of silence - it was really moving. There are guards all over the place and helicopters fly over every five minutes it seems. My apartment is surrounded with security because I live right behind the governor´s office where they had a memorial service last night. Yesterday they planted 192 trees in the big park for each one of the victims which they inagurated today with the president, the king and the prince of austurias.

It reminds me of the one year anniversary of September 11 - that anxiousness and unease. It´s that feeling of uncertainty and reminder of the evil in human kind. Something difficult to take in.

I´m doing well, a bit homesick though. I really miss Davis and my friends. Classes are off to a bit of a rocky start, but things have settled down and I finally have my schedule. I´m taking (these titles are directly translated):
Spanish Theatre during the Golden Age,
Spanish Literature (since 1975),
Psychology of Comunication and
Intervention in Sexual Problems and Couples.

I took a fun day trip the other day to see the main palace of the kings and Franco´s grave. Will tell more and post pictures another day, feeling a bit tired today! (I think I´m getting sick!) bleh.

Anyway, hope all are well in the world!
