Thanks to the two people I went to Sweden to meet with last year, who have since resigned, and their replacements, who are yet to meet a reporting deadline, I'm going back there, leaving Saturday night. The plan is for one week at the company's operations in northern Sweden and then a few days in Hong Kong on the way home. Back around the 18th. Tomorrow I have to organise clothes for 20 degrees below zero and buy a laptop. Then I work all day Friday and Saturday before getting on the plane.
Despite the three days' notice they're giving me for this little expedition (to be fair, it's been a "maybe" for the last two weeks), I may have the best part-time accounting job in the history of the universe. I'm really interested to see what a serious, almost-Arctic-circle winter is like. They only get a few hours of daylight a day at this time of year!
Any advice on buying the laptop appreciated. It needs to be something I can just walk into a store tomorrow and get. I work mostly on big spreadsheets, so I don't want the screen to be too small and I'd like a number pad. With the addition of a docking station, it'll probably replace my five-year-old home computer, so it needs to have enough bells and whistles to meet the requirements of your average low-tech fan for the next few years.
