Tree planting update, with bonus alpaca cria

Jun 08, 2008 21:43

My sister and brother-in-law came out here today to help with some chainsawing and clearing branches from the firebreaks. Two alpaca cria were/are due this month, so I've been keeping a pretty close watch on the alpaca paddock, but I was busy this morning reading Hornblower fanfic, cleaning the house and organising food for the day. Nothing unusual was happening when I checked the alpacas at 8am or 9am, and when sister & BIL arrived at 10:30 I said, "No action on the cria front!", before looking across at the alpacas and seeing that some action had taken place! It must have been a very trouble-free birth. It's a girl, which is great, but has a brown spot, which is not so great. Still, after all the trouble with last year's cria, we'll happily settle for healthy. Maybe we'll just go with the flow and specialise in spotted alpacas.

Sherry, Nabil and Zareena look on (Nabil and Zareena were banished to the other side of the fence because they can be pretty boisterous, and Sherry because she could potentially drink the colostrum that must go into the new cria)

2005 tree planting area

You may remember that on 3 July 2005, it looked like this:

February 2007

And today! I'm standing in almost exactly the same spot as in the picture above.

I walk down there pretty often and think, yes, it's growing but it's not all that impressive, and then I look back at the photos and am suitably impressed. Thanks to everybody who helped with this project!

Tree line along eastern boundary

My sister would hang, draw and quarter me if I posted a recognisable picture of her son on the internet, but I hope I can get away with this one since it's by far the best of a number of tree line pictures we took today!

In 2004, those trees looked like this:

And finally, App watching the goings-on in the alpaca paddock across the road. I look at this photo and I feel like the luckiest person alive.
