Deadwood Season 3

This show mostly made me sad this season, but there were three things I really liked.

1.  Jane and Joanie in "Tell Him Something Pretty" (and also "A Constant Throb")

It's as if the writers had asked exactly what I'd like to see happen here. Except even better, because I couldn't have thought it up. It's so perfect I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Joanie's "I want to be that to you. Even when we don't get along," is one of the high-water marks of my lifelong TV-viewing. How gorgeous.

Jane's so endearingly, vulnerably irrational ("How can you say we been sending secret thought messages and pretend you didn't know?") and jealous ("Is that so? Did you go see Cy real quick?"). Those things would stop being endearing pretty quickly, but I can definitely go with them while Jane slowly comes to believe that Joanie really wants her. And Joanie just takes Jane's drinking and confusion and fear in stride. This scene was so lovely and perfect, but you can imagine that once Jane's sober, she'll be all confused as to whether Joanie really said that and meant it, just like she couldn't quite believe Joanie kissed her in episode 7. She'll have to ask or test it in some way again, and Joanie will just ignore anything that doesn't come across well in the delivery of that question, and say, "Yes" in words or actions.

It's such a well developed relationship, one that doesn't seem aimed at catering to men wanting some f/f action on television (contrast it to Rome, for example).  I'm actually quite glad the show's been cancelled before things have a chance to go wrong for them, like they have for nearly everybody else. Just possibly, they'll make it through the planned movies unscathed.

2.  Al leaping off the balcony to escort Alma after the shooting in "A Constant Throb". Personally leaping into action, not just giving orders to his henchmen! My heart thrilled to the sight!

3.  Al Langrishe waiting with his friend for him to die in "Leviathan Smiles". The scene of them sitting together in the new theatre was beautifully done.

Special mention to the whores at the Gem idolising Alma, and Seth and Alma looking at each other at the very end just before Alma was driven away. What did they still feel for each other?

Bonus punctuation question: when you're quoting a sentence of dialogue within a sentence of your own, do you keep the full stop at the end of the quoted sentence?
ETA: punctuation problem fixed, thanks to hithluin.
