Bring your own supplies

During the week I got a note from cricketk asking if she, wobowikkles, juffles and a real live non-LJ person could stay at my house (actually, she only asked if they could camp outside!) last night before juffles and N-LJP tackled the Avon Descent (two-day whitewater kayak race that starts not far from me) this morning.

Wow, I'm conveniently located for once.  Somebody wants to come all the way out to my house!  Yes indeedy, you are very welcome.  I warned her that I'd be working late and that my kitchen tends to be missing the basics, and she came prepared with the makings for a delicious dinner, except that she forgot the parsley.

cricketk:  Do you have any parsley?
zebra363:  No.  It's occurred to me that I could plant some, but no.
cricketk:  Or basil?
zebra363:  No.
cricketk:  What about dried basil?
zebra363:  I doubt it.  ::pokes around pitiful collection of spices and seasonings::
zebra363:  No, it doesn't look like it....Wait!  Yes!  ::proudly extracts small jar::
zebra363:  Hmm, the use-by date was February 1996.  Only 10 years old.
cricketk:  ::inspects contents::  I think I'll pass.
zebra363:  (sadly)  I guess I'll throw it away.

But I couldn't.  If I've been carrying it around with me all over the country since I presumably bought it in 1993 or 4, it's an old friend.  And it'll probably last me until at least 2016.  Those little seasoning jars hold what amounts to almost a lifetime supply for someone like me.

Secret Santa, if you're reading this?  I don't have a colander.  Draining the pasta was a six-step operation.

juffles had the rather brilliant idea of plugging in the electrical cord at the back of my wood heater.  That makes the fan go, which makes the house warmer!  Amazing.  And I thought it was just something to push out of the way when I was vacuuming.

(Yes, it's daytime and I'm inside on the computer.  Weeds!  Trees!  Weeds!  Weeds!  Aargh, I can't stand it any more!!!  ::hides from acres and acres of Cape Tulip-infested pasture::  Deep breath.  Administer chocolate.  Regroup.  Go back out.  Going now.)
